A Minneapolis Star Tribune editorial today reflects on the hallmarks of "repressive foreign dictatorships -- the Soviet Union of the 1970s, the North Korea or Cuba of today" and their officially produced, self-lauding "news reports" as clear evidence of their rottenness.
Then the paper asks the reader to think about the "Bush Administration's quarter-billion-dollar PR campaign in which at least 20 federal agencies have sent out hundreds of self-promoting TV reports to networks and local stations."
Maureen Dowd of the New York Times writes that President Bush "said his Justice Department had found that the fake news programs are 'within the law so long as they're based upon facts, not advocacy.' " She continues: "And, of course, this is a White House that never makes up facts to suit its purposes or sell its programs."
