State could make smart health care buys

The Star Tribune has a smart editorial on how Minnesota, or any state, could make smarter health care purchases. It's based on a state report recommending a state medical director to survey the research on evidence-based medicine to make sure the state is paying only for services with proven results, along with other ideas. The paper says "they're an improvement on the tools Minnesota has used in recent years - squeezing money out of providers and leaving more patients uninsured - and they represent a valuable new way of thinking about a problem that won't go away."
