Senator John McCain announced more details of his health care plan yesterday. In a nutshell, it's all about competition and a market-based solution.
Competition and the market also today gives us the news that the new CEO of UnitedHealth Group, Inc. received total compensation of more than $5 million last year. (He's gotta go some to catch the compensation total of his predecessor, Bill McGuire.)
Ah, the American way, with 16% of the gross domestic product spent on health care, and, ironically, 16% of the population without health insurance.
You gotta love how that market works.
I always laugh, darkly, when members of Congress offer their thoughts on solving our health care needs. If the first obstacle they encounter isn't the cost, then the next opportunity they offer is a free-market based solution.
Given that they have possibly the best health care plan in the country, and it's paid for by us, I always wonder how they can offer either of the two above without laughing.
I wonder how St. McCain would feel about competing for health care? And without his congressional health care plan, and without his wife's income, would he find coverage on the open-market at a price he could afford at his age and with his pre-existing conditions?
