Health care consumer engagement conference

The Buyers Health Care Action Group in Minneapolis today is hosting a summit on "Consumer Engagement: A Prescription for Better Outcomes."

Just heard from Dr. Shoshanna Sofaer of Baruch College on "What Have Researchers Learned About Consumer Engagement Strategies?"

Some key points from her talk:

• The sense of entitlement of this generation may clash with the message that "more is not always better in health care." The "entitled" may think you're trying to take something away from them without scrutinizing the evidence.

• Consumers/patients won't take more responsibility unless they believe it's in their interest

• It's difficult for employers to simultaneously shift costs and responsibility onto employees

• Employers could help employees learn about hospital safety issues - perhaps by borrowing the slogan of NY's mayor - "If you see something, say something."
