Jeffrey Weeks, freelance mathematician, will present "Teaching about the universe through games and 3-D graphics." The speaker uses computer games to introduce the concept of a "multi-connected universe." This lecture is appropriate for anyone fascinated with space and the universe--from middle school through adulthood.

So let's explore the new tools and technology that pair Google-efficient tools with library-quality results to weave together a rich information web that goes beyond just the World Wide Web. We'll look at tools such as, Google Docs, RSS Reader, Google Scholar, and iGoogle Research Gadgets that will help you access, evaluate, and share information in an easy collaborative environment.

The Peer Research Consultant program was developed in partnership with the University Libraries, MCAE: Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence, and the SMART Learning Commons.
The Supercomputing Institute will host an Open House on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Attendees will be able to tour MSI facilities, including the machine room, the Scientific Development and Visualization Lab, and the LCSE-MSI Visualization Lab. They can also see software demonstrations and displays about research being performed using MSI. We will also have food, goody bags, and door prizes.

In her presentation entitled "Wandering Planets, Falling Apples, Curving Spaces, Whirling Stars: How Unraveling the Mysteries of Gravity has Taught Us About the Universe," Quinn uses the history of understandings about gravity as a template for understanding how science works.
]]>Mechanical engineering professor Jane Davidson will present "Solar After Dark: Storage Options," exploring the latest attempts to harvest and store concentrated solar energy via high-temperature, thermochemical processes to produce fuels. The discussion will include an overview of process options and an estimate of the scalability of these processes to replace petroleum.
