Welcome to Chika Shinohara's Information Site!

Chika Shinohara has started her assistant professorship at the Department of Sociology, Momoyama Gakuin University in Osaka, JAPAN since fall 2009. She is a member of the International Exchange Committee of the Japanese Sociological Society (JSS), which invites sociologists and their families in the world to the 2014 World Congress of the International Sociological Association (ISA) in Yokohama, JAPAN.

She examines growing legal consciousness in Japanese society, considering the effects of international relations in the politics and economy, as well as of the international governmental organizations. Her recent publications are "How Did Sexual Harassment Become a Social Problem in Japan? The Equal Employment Opportunity Law and Globalization" (Advances in Gender Research Vol. 13, 2009) and "Global Pressure, Local Results: The Impact of CEDAW on Working Women in Japan" (Journal of Workplace Rights 13(4), 2009).

Chika collaborates with Christopher Uggen at the University of Minnesota on "Sexual Harassment Comes of Age: A Comparative Analysis of the United States and Japan" (The Sociological Quarterly 50, 2009) and "Sexual Harassment: The Emergence of Legal Consciousness in Japan and the US" (The Asia-Pacific Journal Vol. 31-2-09, 2009). And with Koichi Hasegawa at Tohoku University and Jeffrey P. Broadbent at the University of Minnesota, she wrote "The Effect of 'Social Expectation' on the Development of Civil Society in Japan" (Journal of Civil Society 2007) and "Volunteerism and the State in Japan" (Japan Focus 2007).

This fall, she teaches Sociology 04, Contemporary Sociology, and Japanese Society & Social Institutions. Her seminar next year will cover career decisions in the life course.

My teaching philosophy is that both students and the instructor can enhance their learning from enjoyable interactions - through in-class discussions, activities, and on-line communications. In my courses, I encourage students to take advantage of educational technology, to use their sociological imagination for analyzing local and global phenomena in society, and to share their international experiences in class to broaden their perspectives and future opportunities. I enjoy teaching and learning from my students.
