At-Large Candidates

So after I found out that there is a mayoral election coming up in Duluth I found myself wondering if I even wanted to vote. I mean on the one hand I am 21 years old so technically that vote is mine for the taking.

On the other hand I’m not from Duluth and I don’t even know if I’m going to stay here.

After I did some research and interviewing for my class I found a candidate that I could totally relate to. Tony Cuneo was in the same boat in 1996 as I am in now.

He said that he came here in 1996 to go to UMD and didn’t know what the future held for him. This is the first way that we, along with a large majority of other students, are similar.

After he studied abroad a few times he realized that he couldn’t “shut up about how beautiful and unique Duluth is. He said that the beautiful nature and the urban lifestyle isn’t like any other place.

This is the second way that we are similar. I think that Duluth is such a gorgeous city and it has a lot to offer, some of which we don’t even take advantage of.

So I asked him about what he would like to do to preserve our city. He wants to improve the strengths that set us apart from others and provide better job and economic opportunities for EVERYONE.

Improve on economic opportunities by changing the way that Duluth does business. These are things that I would like to see happen, even if I end up not staying here after school.

The Explanation:
I wanted to do it kind of like a journal entry, because I couldn’t see it as any other way. I wanted it to be in first person so that it shows me relating to the candidate. I hope that other people will see that it is important to vote, even if you aren’t going to stay here or are unsure of staying here after graduation. I wanted people to be able to find ways to relate with the candidates, as I related with Cuneo. Hopefully that will help them make up there mind if they want to vote or not. My audience is definitely college students, and maybe some older people who have lost sight of the reason why they vote. I would say it is for just a general audience of people 18 or older.
I also added the links to the three at-large candidates that I talked to.

She's my favorite! I love her and I can't wait for her to have a sister/daughter very very soon!
