More than six million visitors will swarm the city of Munich in southern Germany for the annual two-week celebration of the world's largest beer festival, Oktoberfest, which opens Saturday.
At first, the Oktoberfest started with a wedding party: Just over 200 years ago, reported by the Star Tribune. Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig celebrated his royal nupitals, and it became an annual event. Nowadays, everyone knows for its towering mugs of beer, oompah music.
All men wearing traditional Bavarian Lederhosen leather shorts and women in bright costumes. According to the Herald Sun, between about six million revelers, seven million liters of the amber nectar in one of the 35 giant beer tents stretching over 26 hectares.
The festival was originally held in October, but was brought forward by one month to take advantage of better weather. This year's event runs until October 7.
