Attend the Minnesota AP Association and Minnesota Newspaper Association Jobs and Internship Fair

This year's fair will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 in the Pinnacle Ballroom at the Commons Hotel in Minneapolis. Students can arrive early and network with other journalism student as well media professionals during breakfast at 8 a.m., interviews begin 8:30 a.m. and go until 12 p.m.

This jobs fair has an established track record for getting students internships and first jobs. It's a great opportunity to talk with professional news managers looking for reporters, online journalists, copy/section editors, page designers, graphic artists and photographers. Weekly newspapers and broadcast members have again been invited to interview students interested in community journalism.

Registration Information:

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication will pay the $10 registration fee for the first ten students who register for the event. Because of the limited number of spots available, SJMC would like to ensure the students who register are serious about attending. Please bring $10 with you to 110 Murphy Hall in order to register. NPR Offers Two Spring 2012 Internship Opportunities

The science and health desk at National Public Radio in Washington, D.C. is seeking summer 2012 interns (paid at $10/hour, 40 hours/week) for the following two positions.

EDITORIAL:
The Science Desk supplies Morning Edition, All Things Considered, the weekend shows and Newscast with stories about health, science, and environmental issues. The intern will assist the reporters, editors and producers with day-to-day tasks on the Science Desk. Duties will include routine administrative tasks, scheduling interviews and studios and may also include researching stories, getting archival tape, attending editorial meetings, and other work as needed. Knowledge of NPR programming is preferred, and demonstrated interest in news and science is essential. Assists with writing, researching and updating science and health news and feature coverage on NPR.org. Experience preferred in writing copy for news and feature stories, and photo editing with Photoshop. Must have excellent writing, researching and editing skills, and ability to work quickly, accurately and under deadline. Flexibility and creativity a plus.

MUTLIMEDIA:

Star Tribune Seeks Summer 2012 Interns

Minneapolis's own Star Tribune seeks 11 interns for its summer 2012 internship program. The 10-week, paid internship seeks students interested in becoming reporters, copy editors, photographers, multimedia producers and designers. Earn Capstone Credit & Work Experience at Star Tribune this Spring

In JOUR 4992: Star Tribune Practicum, students work at the 15th-largest newspaper, get clips and bylines and earn capstone credit. The class is taught at the newspaper and is designed to teach students through hands-on experience while working with professionals. Students will work directly with editors and reporters to produce news, features, photos or multimedia productions for the newspaper's print and online versions.

Most students work 14 hours per week in the newsroom and are paid for their work. The three-credit class also includes one class per week in the newsroom about ethics, computer assisted reporting and other skills from guest speakers including editors and reporters from business, sports, online and other area.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Nov. 4, 2011. Applications are available in the Student Services Office (Murphy 110) and should be returned there with résumé and clips/portfolio if you have them. If you're applying for a writing position and don't have published clips, you may submit news stories from journalism courses you've taken.

Fine Print: Prerequisites: JOUR 3121 for reporters; JOUR 4302 for photographers; JOUR 3451 for video/multimedia positions.

AAJA Sports Journalism Internship

The Asian American Journalists Association partners with the Associated Press Sports Editors for this nine-week internship. The program for students interested in sports journalism careers, features a training from June 1-8, 2012 followed by paid internships at a print, digital or electronic media.

The institute is designed to get students interested in print journalism through opportunities in sports reporting and editing and to enhance racial and gender diversity.

Meredith-Cronkite Fellowship Program Open to Broadcast Students

Get an in-depth, week-long multimedia internship experience (Jan. 1-6, 2012) as part of the Meredith-Cronkite Fellowship Program at ASU in Phoenix, Arizona.

Journalism students of color who are interested in broadcast and are within 12 months of graduation are encouraged to apply. Ten students from journalism schools across the country will be selected and will be immersed into the newsroom of KPHO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Phoenix. Chips Quinn Scholars Program Offers Spring 2012 Internships

Association for Women in Sports Media Accepting Applications for 2012 Scholarship/Internship Program

AWSM has placed more than 100 young women in paid internships at such employers as Sports Illustrated, ESPN, MLB.com and a variety of newspapers around the country. For the summer of 2012, the organization looks to place a dozen applicants into sports internships.

The program is open to female undergraduate, graduate or graduating class of 2012 students.

The top applicant in each of the writing, broadcast, editing and media relations categories will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a paid trip to the 2012 convention in Chicago. All other students selected for an internship will receive a $500 scholarship.

The class helps students tie their internships to their personal goals. In the class, you'll learn what it means to be a professional working in the professional world, plus you will evaluate your internship experience and develop a stronger resume using the skills from your internship.

Finland to offer month-long foreign correspondent program

The Embassy of Finland is accepting applications for scholarships to support a month-long foreign correspondents' program.

The program provides opportunities for newly graduated or soon-to-be-graduating journalists to gain a better understanding of Finland and its culture. The program runs Aug. 1 through 26 and includes briefings on Finland today, meetings with professionals and politicians and visits to businesses, cultural sites and institutions. The program includes a weekend as a guest of a Finnish family as well as trips to different parts of Finland.

The scholarship covers the cost of travel to and from Finland, local travel in Helsinki, accommodation in a single room in a student residence and the daily program, including meals, events, transportation and lodging. The scholarship does not cover medical insurance or per diem allowance.

The Nation Institute seeks applicants for internships

The Nation Institute and The Nation magazine are seeking applicants for their 10 summer internship positions.

All interns have the opportunity to write for TheNation.com. Seven interns' primary responsibilities include fact-checking and research; two interns work as web editorial assistants and one position specifically is reserved for a Hispanic or Latino journalist. All interns participate in career seminars with journalists, politicians and activists.

These internships are full-time positions with schedules running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The internships begin June 7 and end Aug. 19. The position offers a stipend of $150 per week.

Spend the summer at NYU's Hyperlocal Newsroom Academy

At The Hyperlocal Newsroom Academy, students will learn new techniques and sharpen their skills with opportunities to have their best work published on NYTimes.com community news site under the guidance of NYU's journalism faculty.

Three-month graduate-level internships, for credit or non-credit, will be available on a competitive basis. Students can choose one or both six week summer course sessions (four credits each). They also are encouraged to attend The Hyperlocal Academy Weekend, featuring panels and workshops with major players in the emerging world of hyperlocal journalism.

The Associated Press seeks a News Production Specialist (ENPS) for its Washington, D.C. operation.

This position provides on-site, telephone and remote support for software and systems used in television, radio, on-line and network newsrooms in North, Central and South America. Systems include ENPS, AP NewsCenter and AP NewsDesk.

Various responsibilities for planning, testing, deployment, migration, user training, and sales/marketing support. He or she logs and helps resolve problems, interfacing with other development and support groups as necessary.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must be an organized self-starter and team player able to work effectively without direct supervision. Candidate will need to be able to lead training sessions for technical and non-technical teams. The candidate should have professional experience in broadcast or on-line news creation/production, broadcast or on-line systems or operations. Candidates should also have a technical aptitude and a basic understanding of personal computers (PC and Mac) and Microsoft Windows; experience with broadcast or on-line news production systems; and a degree in journalism, computer sciences or a related discipline, or additional relevant work experience. Advanced experience with personal computers, servers and server operating systems or web design and production is a plus. Strong communication skills and problem-solving abilities are required. Written and verbal fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is a plus. Extensive national and international travel may be required. Candidate must be able to work with standard office equipment, including computers, keyboards and telephones, through the course of a regular workday.

Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required.

Internet Broadcasting seeks three interns

St. Paul-based Internet Broadcasting, which produces online news content for television stations across the country, seeks three interns.

National news intern: The intern should have a strong interest in the news (is on top of the news daily) and should have strong writing skills, including command of AP style. This person will be writing headlines, making news judgments, researching interactive news pieces and looking ahead to fill out the national news planning calendar. 



Vertical content: 
We are looking for an intern to assist with vertical content, ranging from daily features to special sections. Some projects may include conducting research for interactive features, writing feature stories, working in the CMS, writing on-air teaser text, participating in brainstorming sessions for new feature ideas and helping to build slideshows. This position is best suited for a creative person with an interest in journalism. 



Social Media/Search: 
The S3O (Search, Social Media, Syndication) intern should have an interest in hyperlocal journalism, search engine syndication and social media. Duties will include curating lists of towns and neighborhoods for dozens of top Nielsen markets, then discovering local publications that match each region. The student needs to be comfortable using a search engine and be familiar with RSS feeds. A genuine interest in learning more about the power of search engines will be helpful. Northeast Minnesota newspapers seek correspondent

Grain real world experience covering the 2011 legislative session for three northeast Minnesota newspapers.

The Mesabi Daily News, the Hibbing Daily Tribune and the Grand Rapids Herald-Review need a correspondent to cover politics and state government. The correspondent will work out of an office in the basement of the capitol building in St. Paul, covering the legislative session from Dec. 20 through May, 27, 2011.

This is a 40-hour per week contract position pays $11 per hour with no benefits. The correspondent will need his or her own computer, and will have daily contact with the supervisor for stories, workday duties and deadlines.

Minnesota Public Radio internship deadline Nov. 19

Get experience and academic credit interning at MPR.

Minnesota Public Radio is seeking applications from SJMC students for two reporter internship openings.

MPR is looking for students who have a solid grasp of convergence journalism and who show skill and interest in working in web platforms, including video and Soundslides production in addition to other tools.

The strongest candidates will have superior writing and reporting skills who also possess strong video storytelling capabilities.

Interns are expected to work 12 to 16 hours per week and can earn one academic credit. This internship offers a $1,000 stipend.

Study AND work at the Star Tribune

Work at the Star Tribune AND earn capstone credit this spring with JOUR 4992, the Star Tribune practicum course.

Students will work directly with editors and reporters to produce news stories. Positions in sports, features, photography and online also are possible.

Students will work 14 hours per week in the Star Tribune newsroom and will have the opportunity to have their work published in the nation's 15th largest daily newspaper. Students are paid for any published work. They also attend one class per week in the newsroom, learning from guest speakers including Star Tribune editors and reporters who cover business, sports and other areas.

The class is taught by long-time award-winning journalist Chris Ison.

Newsday summer internship applications available for 2011

Applications are now available for those interested in becoming reporters, copy editors, videographers and presentation artists for the newspaper and the Web in 2011. Applicants are encouraged to designate their preference in areas such as news, sports, entertainment, features and business, but final determination will be made by the editors. With the exception of presentation artists, interns must have completed their junior year in the spring preceding their internship. Presentation artists must have completed their sophomore year in the spring preceding their internship.

This is a paid internship and interns are entitled to reimbursement for job-related expenses. Each job in the summer program lasts a minimum of 10 weeks. Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington

Hearst Journalism Awards Submission Announcement- Broadcast

The Hearst Journalism Awards are looking for their next winning broadcast feature. Entries must be two reports with a total run time of five minutes, based on but not limited to public affairs, business, investigations, science, sports or weather. The Eric Breindel Collegiate Journalism Award is now accepting applications. Develop a global perspective this summer in Berlin, Germany

The Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP) places multicultural students in 10‐week paid, full time summer internships at American Association of Advertising Agencies member agencies nationwide. It offers those with a serious interest in advertising the opportunity to gain real‐world work experience, establish contacts within the industry, and gain a valuable professional credential that can help them gain entry‐level employment after graduation. The program also offers advertising agencies an opportunity to identify, observe, and recruit student talent, and supports the 4A's efforts to enhance the diversity of our industry.

2010 National Geographic Magazine Photography Internships

IHS Journalism Internship Program

Sharpen your journalism skills during a paid internship in print, broadcast, or investigative journalism during the fall, spring or summer. The deadline for a spring internship is just two weeks away - on November 15, and the summer application deadline is January 31.

The IHS Journalism Internship Program offers internships at newspapers, major media networks and state-based policy organizations. Past interns have worked at 20/20, the Orange County Register, CNN, Fox News, and many other companies and organizations.

The Internship: Minnesota Monthly editorial internships give participants an up-close look at how magazines are made. Cyber-interns needed for Targeted News Service

Targeted News Service, a five-year-old editorial services company based in Washington, D.C., is looking for cyber-interns who want to learn, produce or earn college internship support. Our staff is located in Washington's suburbs, our managing editor is in Utah, our assistant managing editor is in The Phillippines and we have teams working from India, Spain and Singapore, as well as California, Texas and Boston.

We're looking for cyber-interns who can help us:

* Write news stories for America's newspapers that are our clients (Bangor Daily News, Albany Times Union, Buffalo News, Mobile Register, Huntsville Times, Birmingham News, Torrance Daily Breeze, Tulsa World, Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, Maryland Gazette, and more...), and other end-user consumers (we also feed Lexis-Nexis, Factiva, Dialog, ProQuest, Llesiant and Acquire Media).

- Take on cyber-assignments, with guidance, support and editing, of government-oriented regulatory material turning the cold, hard facts into orderly, structured news that a newspaper editor would be compelled to view as necessary - and print.

* Write news briefs on small issues that we believe are relevant to our select audience.

* Assist with critical research to help our company grow.

Four internships with Minnesota Public Radio

Minnesota Public Radio has four internship openings for the 2009-10 academic year:

Public Insight Journalism Intern
The Intern will work on a project to link research about people's behavior in on-line social networks and the incentives that can be used to invite people to be more active in networks to our outreach activities for the Public Insight Network. The intern's work rhythm will include regular statuses to review work to date and adjust project direction based on findings culminating in one (if a one-semester internship) or two (if a two-semester internship) capstone presentations or demonstrations containing recommendations or mock-ups/prototypes for network applications. Production Intern, Magazine Shows

Staff Reporter

The Minnesota Daily is looking for skilled writers to join our staff as Staff Reporters. Staff Reporters are responsible for developing story ideas and source contacts. They maintain beat relations as well as gather accurate and complete information and resources. Staff Reporters will cover major developments on their beat. This is generally 2 to 4 stories per week that are accurate, fair, complete, clear, concise, well organized, adhere to Daily style and are highly readable. This individual will meet deadlines, formulate news judgment and make decisions. They will work closely with Associate Editors to develop strategies for handling stories and ensures photo and art assignments are filled out. Staff Reporters will keeps current in job-specific topics by reading local newspapers, as well as trade journals or magazines that apply to the beat on a daily basis.

Previous news writing experience preferred. Applicants with a quality collection of clips preferred. Should be familiar with the University community. Must be a University of Minnesota student.

Editorial Cartoonist

The Minnesota is looking for a skilled individual to join our staff as an Editorial Cartoonist. This individual will be responsible for creating four to five daily Editorial Page cartoons per week, commenting on current political and social events. Keeps current in local and national affairs.

Portfolio review with an emphasis on originality of ideas and mature artistic style. Must be a University of Minnesota student.

About the internship opportunities:
NBC Universal will offer two students the opportunity to become NBC Fellows and join one of the following NBC Programs for summer 2009 as interns. Deadline application is March 27, 2009.

This internship is held during the summer at CBS affiliate KYW-TV in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deadline application is April 3, 2009.

Mar 27 Deadline: AAJA Convention News Project internship

The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) has designed its convention project to simulate the convergence newsroom of today. This program will provide "mojo" (mobile journalism) and other news training opportunities to college students and professionals at the 2009 AAJA National Convention, to be held Aug. 12-15, 2009 in Boston.

From the applications, 20 of the most promising students will be selected as finalists and given the opportunity for building skills and developing their portfolios. They will participate in pre-convention training that will include interactive online courses in interviewing, multimedia, ethics, and an option of visual and audio techniques. They will also be given pre-convention assignments covering issues related to the journalism industry today and/or the Asian American/Pacific Islander community. Of those students, 12 will be selected to cover convention, with travel and hotel accommodations provided.

Internship opportunities with Radio Free Europe

Radio Free Europe (RFE), one of the largest media organizations in the world, provides news and information in 20 countries where a free press is either banned or not fully established. The organization is seeking interns for their communications department at their headquarters in Prague, or in their Washington, D.C. office. Internships are unpaid, but students will have rich opportunities to draft press releases and event reports, manage web content, support media and congressional outreach, and be involved in journalism advocacy efforts, research and event planning for VIP visits. June 1 -Deadline for Capital Semester on Political Journalism

The Fund for American Studies, in partnership with Georgetown University, is sponsoring a fifteen-week academic internship program in Washington D.C. They are now taking applications for the fall 2009 and spring 2010 programs. Participants will experience a hands-on journalism experiences along with full-time academic experience at Georgetown University. You can learn more about the program online. SPJ Region 6 Conference is March 27-28

What's Going to Happen with the Economy? What's Going to Happen with Journalism?

Since 2000, SPJ has joined with the Northwest News Broadcasters Association, the Minnesota Associated Press, the Radio Television News Directors Association and other journalism groups to offer the Midwest Journalism Conference, one of the top regional journalism conferences in the country. The Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism

The Carter Center Mental Health Program in Atlanta, GA provides six one-year fellowships for U.S. journalists to report on a selected topic regarding mental health or mental illnesses. The Fellowships are designed to increase accurate reporting on mental health issues and decrease incorrect, stereotypical information.

Each journalist awarded will receive a $10,000 stipend. Applicants must have at least three years of professional experience in print or electronic journalism, submit an application packet (packet found online), and attend orientation and presentation meetings in September at the beginning and end of the Fellowship year. Fellows will not be required to leave their current employment. Awards will be announced July 10, 2009. Deadline: April 20, 2009.
