Be a CLA Student Ambassador!

POSITION DESCRIPTION

CLA Ambassadors are a group of committed student leaders who are selected to serve as representatives of the College of Liberal Arts. As Ambassadors you will be trained in basic interpersonal and group communication skills, group facilitation skills, and leadership development. Various functions include: - Active role as student advisory panel (feedback on collegiate marketing and promotional materials, both print and web based). - Customized outreach to prospective and admitted student populations, including participation in prospective student campus/collegiate visits and various recruitment events. (Your role might include speaking on a student panel, coordinating event logistics, serving as a tour guide, mingling with prospective families at receptions, etc.). - Promotion of the College of Liberal Arts and the University of Minnesota as whole. - As part of the CLA Student Envoy initiative, engage with CLA alumni through face-to-face interviews, held in alumni workplaces across the Twin Cities.

This is an incredible opportunity to:
- Network with CLA alumni - Gain experience working on professional events - Gain public speaking experience - Interact with CLA leadership, like the dean, administrators, and faculty - Get to know fellow CLA students, be part of a group - The list goes on!

Students Receive Discount to Oct. 6 Beardsley Lecture

In honor of the late John Beardsley, the Beardsley lecture honors the public relations guru's legacy with a lecture about new ways of communicating.

Sponsored by Minnesota Public Relations Student Association (PRSA), Padilla Speer Beardsley and the University of Minnesota, this year's lecture features Michael Chorost, Ph.D., a technology theorist who, most recently, wrote his memoir about recovering his hearing with a cochlear implant.

The lecture will take place October 6, 2011 at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs on the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities West Bank Campus.

The lecture is $25 for students and $50 for the general public. But, the first 30 students (graduate or undergraduate) to register by coming to room 115 in Murphy Hall will receive a $15 discount and will only have to pay $10 (check made out to the University of Minnesota only). You must bring the check when you register.

Tour Campus Radio Station Radio K on Sept. 15

Campus radio station Radio K, run and operated by U of MN students, is hosting a tour of its studios on September 15. See where shows take place, equipment used and learn about opportunities for students at the station.

MN Daily Alumni Association Annual Mixer and Silent Auction Event

You are invited to join the MN Daily Alumni Association at the 2011 Annual Mixer and Silent Auction Event. Come meet and network with alumni while getting a tour of TCF Stadium.

Student Tickets are $10 ahead of time and $15 at the door. Ticket price includes: soda, beer, wine, hors d'oeuvres and stadium tour. Proceeds from the Silent Auction will benefit the MDAA Scholarship Fund.

SPJ to meet Thursday

The University of Minnesota's chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The meeting will take place in the conference room in the Digital Media Studios. The agenda includes finalizing plans for its First Amendment Free Food Festival in April.

Spoken word artist to appear at Ivory Tower 'Writer's Block' workshop

FUSE, Ivory Tower, and Voices Merging will hold another installment of their Writer's Block workshop series Wednesday, featuring spoken word artist Tou SaiKo Lee.

Tou SaiKo Lee is a local spoken word and hip hop artist/activist. He is part of a hip-hop duo called Delicious Venom and MCs for a socially conscious funk/hip-hop band called PosNoSys (Post Nomadic Syndrome). In his music, he addresses human rights violations, diversity in America, race and the media, gang violence and arts for social change. He is the coordinator for creative development and outreach for the Center for Hmong Arts and Talent (CHAT), a non-profit organization in St. Paul that aims to nurture Hmong artists through community classes and programs.

The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Hall Library, 207 Church St. S.E. For more information, log onto http://www.ivorytower.umn.edu/.

Are you FAB material?

FAB: Fashion & Business is starting a monthly fashion publication this semester! If you love all things fashion (social and fashion trend spotting, dress, fashion events etc.) and you love writing or media production, we want YOU to get involved!

FAB is hiring applicants for two positions: staff writers and spokesperson. Staff writers will be responsible for producing fashion-based written content for the publication and spokesperson(s) will be working primarily with YouTube and making videos (event coverage, fashion advice, on-campus interviews, and style how-to's.)

Pay It Forward Tour offers spring break trip/volunteer op

For those looking for something to do this spring break, consider the Pay It Forward Tour sponsored by Students Today Leaders Forever.

This nine-day community service trip helps students travel across the country serving others by volunteering at nursing homes, working at food shelves, cleaning up city parks and more.

This year, the U of M is sending six buses to three cities: Denver, Memphis, Tenn., and Washington, D.C. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience while traveling the country and meeting people from all walks of life.

Campaign To Reduce High-risk Drinking Launches This Week

Called "The Other Hangover," the effort is an integrated ad campaign designed by a group of undergraduates from one of the SJMC's past National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) teams. The group competed in a 2009 National Student Advertising Competition where their campaign was considered one of the best and most innovative in the country. The campaign received a $75,000 grant from The Century Council to implement and evaluate the campaign. Elements of the campaign will be visible this fall both online and across campus. PRSSA event: 2010 Census Forum with MN State Sen. Terri Bonoff

PRSSA will host a Census Forum to teach students about the importance of the 2010 Census and how to participate.

Minnesota State Senator Terri Bonoff will speak about the importance of the Census, how it affects Minnesotans and how to participate in it. Sen. Bonoff will also be available to answer questions about any confusion people may have that would impede them from participating in the Census.

U of M Student Film Fest happening in April

Student Unions & Activities will be hosting the U of M Student Film Festival on April 15-17. Students are able to direct, edit and/or write a film that will submitted into the festival. When submitting the film, students are given the option to either enter it into the film competition, where the films are judged and winners are awarded prizes, or they can submit the film into the festival viewing only. The deadline for film submissions is March 22. Find more information online.

Misrepresentation of Minorities in the Media Week, 11/16-20

Learn and discuss how the mainstream media uses language, rhetoric and images to portray certain stereotypes and misrepresent various minority groups. The week includes a panel discussion with reporters and professors, a documentary, and media training. There will be free food at every event.

Mock Trial provides a chance for participants to work on improvisation, critical thinking, analytical skills, and storytelling capabilities, which are applicable to nearly every field, even beyond law-based professions. Mock Trial also offers a creative opportunity for actors and those wishing to improve their theatrical abilities.

At the next meeting on Wednesday April, 1, 2009 there will be committee time to continue working on projects. It is also the beginning of the PRSSA Recycling Drive, running until April 7th come and drop off your recycling at the PRSSA Recycling Drive Table in Coffman Union on April 2, 3, 6 and 7.

As a reminder, forms for the April 6th Networking Event are due by the April 1st meeting.

PRSSA's Relay for Life team will be fundraising on April 2-3 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. outside on the Coffman Union mall. We will be selling cotton candy for $2 and all proceeds will go toward Colleges Against Cancer's annual fundraising event. More information about Relay for Life

Throughout the day there will be a series of workshops and speakers that will provide great information about internships and jobs.
