Jan. 30 Deadline - SJMC Scholarship Application

Apply now for a number of scholarships offered exclusively to SJMC students! Deadline is this Friday, January 30.

Please note: there's a section on the online scholarship application that we want to bring to your attention in particular. If you are at or above 75 credits and are requesting scholarship support for the entire academic year, you will be asked to tell us why you need full funding for both semesters. It's important that you provide a thorough explanation so that we have enough information to make an informed scholarship decision. To access the online application form, please visit

The deadline for submitting an application is Friday, January 30, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. Applying for a scholarship is easy: complete the online application form by the deadline, and you will automatically be considered for every scholarship for which you qualify. Upon submission of a scholarship application, you will receive a confirmation and tracking number for your completed application.

MN Daily Staff Reporter position open

The Minnesota Daily is seeking an experienced, talented writer for the staff reporter position. The reporter works with an editor to develop stories, interviews sources and writes 2-3 stories a week. New mass communication study abroad program

The Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) has recently added a Communication & Mass Media program to their curriculum. A unique feature of the DIS program is a one-week study tour to London which includes a visit to the BBC. This study tour and a shorter regional tour are included in the cost of tuition. Linda Lindholm recently attended a week-long Educators Workshop at DIS in Copenhagen and would be happy to talk with any students who are interested in this study abroad program. Contact:

Voice your ideas, get published and win up to $2,000

With a little more than two weeks remaining, now is the opportunity to learn more about Access and to submit a 1,000 – 1,500 word essay. We’re challenging Gen Y undergraduate and graduate-level students to voice their ideas on where Access will take us next and how it will impact business, technology, medicine, the environment, the economy, and more. The winner will have their essay featured in Access Review, the annual business magazine published by FedEx that explores the powerful, positive megatrend of Access through a variety of individual, social, economic, and global lenses. Winners will also receive full registration to the 2009 Net Impact Conference at Cornell University, and Net Impact is providing cash prizes of $2,000 (1st place), $1,000 (2nd place), and $500 (3rd place). SPH Public Service Announcement Contest

The University of Minnesota School of Public Health is sponsoring its 3rd annual “It’s Global�? public service announcement (PSA) contest. School of Public Health (SPH) officials hope it will attract talented novice and seasoned filmmakers from across the country and beyond to heed the call and submit their work.

The contest provides filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their original work while making a statement on global public health topics such as pollution, nutrition, refugee health, climate change, clean water, infectious disease, and natural disaster preparedness.

Entrants will get to test their talent as they describe a public health problem, identify a potential solution, and present, via film media, a clear call to action. The entries must be 30 seconds or less (without credits).

Select entries will be showcased Monday, April 6, 2009 and the $250 youth category first-place prize and the adult category $500 first-place prize will be awarded. All entries will be screened throughout the SPH-sponsored National Public Health Week Film Festival (April 6-11) in Minneapolis.

Jan. 28 PRSSA Meeting

The first meeting of of the spring semester will be Wednesday January 28, 2009. At the meeting you can learn how to become a member in PRSSA, and hear our guest speaker from Minnesota PRSA, food will also be served at the meeting.

Free Networking Opp at MN Newspaper Assoc. Convention

The 2009 Minnesota Newspaper Association Convention is coming up on Thursday, January 29 and Friday, January 30 at the Sheraton Hotel South in Bloomington, Minn. You will have the opportunity to network with more than 800 Minnesota newspaper professionals, including editors, publishers, and decision makers! The Deadline is fast approaching to apply for the three summer internships being offered through the Chicago Chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association. Applications must be postmarked on Feb. 1, 2009.

The Construction Writers Association Scholarship

The Construction Writers Association (CWA) is awarding scholarship(s) titled Build A Future Scholarship to undergraduate students who demonstrate outstanding skills, aptitude and motivation in the fields of journalism, communications, and public relations as they apply to the fields of architecture, engineering, or construction.

The monetary award is $2,000 (US Dollars) and it is open to students pursuing studies in any of the above fields. This scholarship also includes a full conference registration to the CWA Annual Conference. The estimated value is about $3,000.

The American Copy Editors Society Conference in Mpls

The American Copy Editors Society will be holding its 2009 annual conference at the Minneapolis Hilton from April 30 to May 2. With the theme of “Editing for the Future,�? the Twin Cities conference will focus on what the future holds for editors of the printed word while also helping them to be a part of that future. Also, the conference will feature the fundamentals of the craft while bringing together copy desk executives, professionals in many media, students and academics. Rates are reduced if you sign up before Feb. 28. For students, they are $75 for one day and $125 for all three days. If you are a student who is a member of ACES, that drops to $40 for one day and $75 for three. A hotel room at the Hilton costs $159 a night.
