JOUR 4990: Media in the Marketplace shows students business side of publishing

Spots are still available for JOUR 4991: Media in the Marketplace. This class gives students an inside look at the business side of journalism and publishing. Take an in-depth look at what it takes to lead a news company, learn about advertising sales and explore business practices for news and media corporations.

Students will get detailed insights into the business side of media industries, including the latest trends in digital media, television/radio, newspapers, magazines and sports marketing.

Learn about the challenges of the new economic environment to publishers and how they affect the media industry. This class gives students a chance to get out of the classroom and features trips to ad agencies, newspapers, television and radio stations, pro sports facilities and Internet outlets. Plus, guest speakers from top Twin Cities media professionals make frequent appearances.

The class is instructed by SJMC senior fellow and former publisher of the Star Tribune J. Keith Moyer. Moyer brings his unique, real-life experience of leading a large metropolitan newspaper to students.
