Murphy News Service Offers Real-World Experience

What began as a pilot program in 2011 has morphed into a full-blown news service. The Murphy News Service allows students from intermediate reporting classes to be put on assignment by Minnesota newspapers.

Run by senior fellow Keith Moyer and associate professor Chris Ison, the Murphy News Service gives SJMC students the chance to have their work and reporting published in newspapers across Minnesota.

Newspapers let students know which stories they need covered and the students do the reporting, interviewing and oftentimes, take photos for the story.

Participating papers include the Swift County Monitor, the St. Cloud Times, the Downtown and Southwest Journals. Recently, the ECM-Sun Group of newspapers began taking advantage of the news service.

Twelve SJMC majors are part of the reporting group with Ison and Moyer overseeing the editing and reporting process.
