SJMC Assistant Professor Brendan Watson has been selected as one of 12 fellows to the 2013 Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute. The program is held at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Phoenix, Ariz.
The weeklong institute will take place in January 2013 and allows fellows to engage with a range of issues related to entrepreneurship. The fellows will engage in a number of activities, including designing a sample semester-long course in entrepreneurial journalism, learning how to integrate other disciplines into the entrepreneurial journalism teaching experience, learning techniques of business development, establishing contacts with public and private developers and more.
Prof. Watson joined SJMC in fall 2012 and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. His research examines how social structures affect communication about local issues involving conflict. Previously, Watson was a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times of Florida where he led early efforts to start multimedia reporting. At SJMC, he teaches Convergence Journalism and Information for Mass Communication.
