Students Create Series About Subprime Lending

Throughout the 2012-2013 school year, University of Minnesota School of Journalism & Mass Communication students enrolled in Investigative Reporting worked with MinnPost to create a series about subprime lending. You can now read all of the stories in one place online. The project was made possible through a grant from the Northwest Area Foundation.

Students researched, interviewed, wrote and created content for the articles in the fall semester of 2012. The articles continued to be published on the online news site through spring 2013.

MinnPost reporter Sharon Schmickle worked with the class along with instructor Chris Ison. "It was a wonderfully constructive and instructive process," Schmickle says of working with the students. "The editing and polishing [of the stories] was very hands-on."

The stories were created completely by students, from in-depth interviews to the production of graphics. "The online space allows for longer, more in-depth stories," said Ison.
