UMN SJMC Launches Alliance for Women in Media Student Affiliate

In fall 2013, the Alliance for Women in Media's Minnesota chapter launched a student-led affiliate. The group aims to expand opportunities for women students to interact with experienced leaders in the media industry.

"It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome the AWM University of Minnesota Student Affiliate," said AWM National Chair Kay Olin. "We appreciate the leadership and mentoring from the local AWM members to help form this student affiliate."

The AWM Minnesota board members will mentor students leaders and Kathleen Hansen, director of undergraduate studies at SJMC, will serve as the campus adviser.

Christina Munnell, a junior studying professional journalism, will serve as president. Additional board members include: president-elect Molly Davis, a sophomore studying photojournalism; secretary Maia Noll, a sophomore studying strategic communications; treasurer Tiffany Ng, a senior studying advertising; programming chair Rachel Devries, a junior studying public relations; and membership chair Emily Planek, a freshman journalism major. All board members are students in the University of Minnesota School of Journalism & Mass Communication.

"These officers displayed passion and commitment to the mission of advancing the impact of women in the media and allied fields," said AWM-Minnesota president Monique Linder.

The group has more than 30 members and will continue to expand.
