Fair Trade Fete (MPIRG)

The Fair Trade taskforce is working to bring Fair Trade and local products to campus. This is great work of kindness. The current labor practices that results from free trade markets and agreements cause economic disparities, lower living standards, job loss, rural dislocation, global racial inequalities, widespread toxic dumping and environmental degradation. These are not kind acts. Fair Trade offers farmers and artisans a living wage. Fair Trade creates a system in which producers and workers belong to cooperates and community development organizations that invest in quality housing, schools, scholarships, and health programs. Fair Trade supports farmers who use environmentally friendly and sustainable techniques, including organic and shade farming. Supporting Fair Trade and working to get local farmer and artisan products to campus is a great stride towards social justice. Social justice is an ultimate form of kindness.

From 11:00 - 1:00 across the east and west banks of the Minneapolis campus, students will march with large puppets and decorations, giving candy and information about Fair Trade to fellow students along the way.
