Selections from the Francis V. Gorman Rare and Special Art Book Collection have been highlighted in annual exhibitions since 2003. These exhibitions have focused on themes such as celebrity culture, graphic design, the history of exhibition catalogs, and the ritual of reading, to suitably and beautifully reveal the rare materials in the collection. By extending the curatorship to especially appointed graduate students, the exhibits serve as a scholarly and collaborative opportunity between faculty, students, departments, and the Libraries. These curatorial contributions will be showcased in this year's retrospective.

Artist Joonja Lee Mornes draws inspiration from watching nature in various lights through the seasons. Seasonal, temporal, and phenomenal changes were a constant part of Mornes's observations while growing up in Korea. Since then her observations have turned from the rice fields to the prairie landscape.

Selected paintings and new window installation pieces will be featured in the exhibit, Layering Time and Motion: Paintings and installation by Joonja Lee Mornes.

This exhibition is Mornes's second Cultural Community Partnership Grants Award from the Minnesota State Arts Board. The University Libraries' Architecture & Landscape Architecture Library is pleased to be the hosting partner for this exhibition.

Mornes has recently exhibited at the Phipps Center for the Arts, the Flaten Art Museum in St. Olaf College and the College of St. Benedict. Other past exhibition highlights are an installation at the MAEP Gallery in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, scenery design for a dance theater production, Cut Sleeve, at Intermedia Arts, and a group exhibition at the Katherine Nash Teaching Gallery, University of Minnesota.

In pursuing his dream of a collaboration that would collect immigrant letters in Europe and America, Theodore Blegen worked to reveal "grassroots history" through his scholarship at the University of Minnesota and other institutions. The Immigration History Research Center makes that dream come alive in a multi-media project that constructs emotional portraits of immigrants through Finnish, Italian, Russian, and Ukrainian letters from the IHRC's ethnic collections. The exhibit includes selections from Blegen's personal papers drawn from the collections of the University Archives.

This year's First Fridays series, Out of Bounds: Challenging the Status Quo, will explore the concepts of suppression and expression in the varied collections held by the University of Minnesota Libraries.

Throughout history, questions of access versus restriction have been debated in scientific theory, religion, political thought, and creative thinking. Presenters will examine who have decided these questions—and why.

Banned Children's Books and Censorship of Comic Books
Presented by the Children's Literature Research Collections

J. Randolph Cox, Hess Collection Honorary Consultant and Editor of Dime Novel Round Up, notes that "Reading dime novels and other cheap literature was once thought to lead to a life of crime. When the authorities attacked material considered sensational and filled with stories of bloodshed and crime, publishers were forced to devise ways to stay in business and out of jail."

Meredith Gillies, CLRC Library Assistant, will talk about how censorship of the sensational did not end with the dime novels and story papers.

Karen Nelson Hoyle, CLRC Curator, will talk about censorship of three Newbery Award winning books--Jean Craighead George, Julie of the Wolves (1972), Katherine Paterson, Bridge to Terabithia (Crowell, 1977), and Lois Lowry, The Giver (Houghton Mifflin, 1993). Images come from their books and manuscripts in the Kerlan Collection.

Wartime Military Censorship & Detention Camps
Presented by the Immigration History Research Center and the Social Welfare History Archives

European refugees produced a remarkable outpouring of print in Displaced Person camps immediately after World War II. Elizabeth Haven Hawley, Program Director of the Immigration History Research Center, analyzes how military administration of camps and the scarcity of printing materials affected the production, distribution and consumption of cultural print.

In February 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed executive order 9066, authorizing the relocation and internment of Japanese and Japanese Americans. Linnea Anderson, Assistant Archivist of the Social Welfare History Archives, will discuss how evidence in the Survey Associates records reveals how the political climate and the demands of military censorship affected the effort by staff of Survey magazine to present the story of a Japanese detention camp during the World War II era.
