The Last Starfighter
One of the most memorable movies of my childhood, The Last Starfighter. And yes, it is the "Collector's Edition."

What other movies were memorable, but somehow forgotten?

I'd have to say "Yellowbeard." Love that movie!

Barry! Good to hear from you. I've never heard of "Yellowbeard!" I'll have to check it out.
By the way, I highlighted Scrawlers.com as an example of a "Web 2.0" application in a recent presentation I gave here at the U. I don't know if you saw a spike in your site's membership (ha!) but any advertising is good, right?

We'll need to sit down and watch that sometime Shane. It's been a while since I saw that movie.
One of my favorite movies of all time is The Natural. I saw that at my birthday party when I was a kid with about 7 of the guys I hung out with. I remember looking over at them in the theater during the movie and realized how good I had it.
Posted by: Cheesehead Craig at May 8, 2007 09:17 AM
The Natural ... yes. Now that was an inspiring movie. Did you see that they are releasing a director's cut:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=alipour/070507
Apparently this version will start with Hobbes as kind of a washed up, run down man and then move into the story of why. We'll have to watch this one when it comes out.
Posted by: Shane at May 8, 2007 09:21 AM
Don't know if I can. That film has a lot of meaning for me and to see it altered might be too much. We'll see.
Posted by: Cheesehead Craig at May 8, 2007 09:39 AM
Last Starfighter is a nice little movie. In the spirit of Yellowbeard, I also liked Time Bandits and Brazil. Young Frankenstein and Monty Python and the Holy Grail will always make me laugh no matter how many times I see them. Silver Streak with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder is a long lost classic.
Not to sound like a snob, but the book The Natural is better than the movie (I do think the movie is good). The book is a little darker and more cynical. Let's just say that the homer into the light standards is the high point of the book from which the hero can only go down. The ending is just heartbreaking.

going off topic to complain about the death of Drive 105 and its replacement by "soft rock of the 70's" or whatever "LOVE 105" is going to be...
lousy ABC radio - anything to protect their beloved KQ

Forgotten movies from childhood? What about "Shane"? Who can forget the ending..."Shane! Come back Shane!!"
Recently rented "The World's Greatest Athlete" for my 7-yeasr old. I thought it was a great movie way back when. After viewing it again, it came across as very, very cheesy.
Posted by: Brian Maas at May 8, 2007 02:44 PM
Free's mention of "Young Frankenstein" made me think of "Spaceballs" - really bad movie, but still memorable. :-)
Does anyone else remember "Caveman" - I saw that at the old Hollywood Theater on Johnson St NE. Man, it was great having a movie theater within walking distance when I was growing up, even if it was a pretty crappy one...

Congratulations MOJO, I think you're the first person to ever use the word Best in the same post as the word Cocktail (referring to the movie).
Snyder, is that Caveman movie with Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach?
Posted by: Freealonzo at May 8, 2007 03:40 PM
Thanks Free....
If you haven't checked out Rick's post today, I would highly recommend doing so.....he tells a great story.

Yes, that was the Caveman movie I was thinking of, though I don't think I realized who Ringo Starr was when I saw it at age nine. :-)
Posted by: Snyder at May 8, 2007 03:50 PM
How about Capricorn One about the faked Mars landing? I saw this at the Hollywood theatre in Eau Claire, WI in 1978. Outstanding. O.J. Simpson was in it way before the (alleged) murder!

28 more days and the story comes out. Counting down.
Posted by: illuminati at May 8, 2007 06:51 PM
The original "Rocky". Best movie of all time.
Posted by: bruce at May 8, 2007 10:33 PM
Illuminati - 28 Weeks Later (you had a typo there) is coming out shortly in movie theaters. I am excited about it as well.
Posted by: Cheesehead Craig at May 9, 2007 09:11 AM
Shane - did you score a Piranha?
I got to the game last night at about 6:00 and was able to get one. They're awesome!
Looks like the next good promotion is 5/26 for DQ cap night. There's a photo of them on the Twins web site and they look better than usual.
Posted by: Snyder at May 9, 2007 10:34 AM
Snyder, did you get the fishing lure, or the plush toy? I'm going for the fishing lure. I've got a complete set of all the lures the Twins have ever given away, including the Eric Milton Fishing Weasel. So, I'm pretty gung ho about getting one. Anyone have one that they could part with?
Posted by: Shane at May 9, 2007 10:37 AM
the stuffed piranahs looked pretty cool, i have to say.
my favorite promotion of the last few years had to be "joe mauer sideburns night"
Still waiting for "jason tyner and michael cuddyer's baserunning pilates dvd night"
blog along with Neshek night might not be bad either
and for me, i'd love to see "Lew Ford on the 60 day DL appreciation night" (i'm not a fan, to say the least, of Mr. Ford)

Old movies... hmmm...
Erik the Viking (love the berserker father/son duo)
Raising Arizona.. "when there wasn't any meat to be had we ate fowl... when there wasn't any fowl to be had we ate crawdads...When there wasn't any crawdads to be had we ate sand...YOU ATE WHAT?... we ate sand... YOU ATE SAND??... thats right". Classic line to an awesome movie.
Better Off Dead ... "now it's a shame people goin and throwing away a perfectly good white boy like that" ... I sneakily scanned this movie when setting up my wedding list at Target with my wife. My best friend bought it... the wife was not happy. Actually any John Cusak movie prior to Con-Air would make my list.
Posted by: zooomx at May 9, 2007 12:35 PM
I got the finger puppet.
I was working on Friday night, so I didn't make it to that game. Otherwise I'd help you out since I'm not that ga-ga over fishing gear.
I agree with zooomx about "Better off Dead" and the other old Cusack movies, though I'm also a fan of "High Fidelity" and "City Hall"
Posted by: Snyder at May 9, 2007 01:04 PM
Raising Arizona is one of the best "line" movies ever. One of my favorites is:
"Do these balloons come in funny shapes?"
Old Man behind counter: "Not unless you think round is funny."
I love that.

gawd, I hate sidetracking a perfectly good thread. ...
There's a sign at the Rapid Park parking lot, "Last day of public parking, May 10th". It's beautiful.
I'd go with Time Bandits. I know it was previously mentioned, but I watched that movie all the time growing up.
Posted by: Drake33 at May 9, 2007 03:00 PM
Drake33,
I've also heard that there is no more contract parking after May 31st. Maybe that's Illuminati's story that he/she is says is coming out in early June: there will be such a hue and cry over the loss of parking at the Rapid Park site that Opat and company lose faith in the site and pull the plug. Either that Illuminati has a 63 year old calendar and is talking about the potential of the D-Day invasion.

Princess Bride.
Best line:
"Stop the rhyming now, and I mean it!"
"...does anybody want a peanut?"
Posted by: tato at May 9, 2007 04:29 PM
Does anyone know where CSC is moving their volleyball leagues to?
I don't really care, but I am kind of curious since CSC used to compete with Spikeworks, which was run by my old college roommate and a buddy of his.
Posted by: Snyder at May 9, 2007 04:35 PM
From the Princess Bride I prefer:
"Inconceivable!"
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
Posted by: Cheesehead Craig at May 9, 2007 04:43 PM
My favorite line from Princess Bride, taken from imdb.com: (The "land war" part kills me...)
Vizzini: You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched glasses when your back was turned! Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...
Vizzini: [Vizzini stops suddenly, and falls dead to the right]
Posted by: Derek at May 10, 2007 09:59 AM
The best lines from The Princess Bride come from this piece of dialog:
Vizzini: I can't compete with you physically, and you're no match for my brains.
Man in black: You're that smart?
Vizzini: Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?
Man in black: Yes.
Vizzini: Morons.

So any of those ballpark roof proponents going to the dome today to spend a gorgeous 80 degree day watching baseball INDOORS?
Posted by: Freealonzo at May 10, 2007 10:15 AM
Yech -- the very thought of wasting such a beautiful day to indoor baseball makes my stomach turn. Is it 2010 yet?
Posted by: The Tube at May 10, 2007 12:35 PM
I sit corrected. Shane, THAT is my favorite line too. Rounding out the top three would be at the end when Westley finally tries to walk and he says something like, "In that case....mmmm" He makes the "mmmm" noise as he tries to regain his footing. Tough to explain via text, just watch next time.
Posted by: Derek at May 10, 2007 01:58 PM
I will say, even as a Dome supporter, that it really sucks for virtually all day games. I don't mind being indoors for an evening game when the sky is darkening -- in fact, I barely notice anymore -- but seeing the mid-day sun light up the teflon roof is discouraging.

Further lines from The Princess Bride:
They are climbing up the Cliffs of Insanity-
VIZZINI: You were supposed to be this colossus. You were this great, legendary thing. And yet he gains.
FEZZIK: Well, I'm carrying three people. And he's got only himself.
VIZZINI: I do not accept excuses.
Posted by: Cheesehead Craig at May 10, 2007 04:50 PM
Meatballs!
Posted by: DouglasG at May 10, 2007 08:38 PM
Westley: Who are you? Are we enemies? Why am I on this wall? Where is Buttercup?
Inigo Montoya: Let me 'splain……. No, there is too much. Let me sum up
Posted by: Fezzik at May 11, 2007 08:36 AM
Oh god, great topic.
Better Off Dead : TWO DOLLARS!
The John Hughes Chronicles:
The Breakfast Club
Sixteen Candles
Pretty in Pink
Some Kind of Wonderful (honorary association)
Night of the Comet (cheesy, campy, awesome)
Ladyhawke
Adventures in Babysitting (Don't f*ck with the babysitter!)
The Princess Bride: The William Goldman book is absolutely hilarious, almost more so than the film.
Westley: Give us the gate key.
Yellin: I have no gate key.
Inigo: Fezzik, tear his arms off.
Yellin: Oh, you mean *this* gate key.
Prince Humperdinck: Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it. I'm swamped.
Count Rugen: Get some rest. If you haven't got your health, then you haven't got anything.

Prediction; By this time next week the Twins will be 10 games behind the AL Central leader.
Usually the season ends around the 4th of July - I guess it'll come sooner this year.....It doesn't matter where you sit when you're watching a loser team in a loser sport.
Posted by: Buck Faseball at May 11, 2007 02:23 PM
Buck, that is hilarious!!! Good one. I can't tell whether you are serious or not. FYI, August 10th last year, we were 11 games out. We've got LOTS of time.

go BUCK yourself

Ponson better be off the roster by the end of the night. What a joke!

Buck Faseball - A One Act Play.
Buck Faseball's wife: "How does this dress make me look?"
Buck Faseball: It makes your ass look fat!
Buck Faseball's kid: "Dad, can you help me with my homework?"
Buck Faseball: "Man you are so stupid, do it yourself!"
Buck Faseball to his Therapist: "I don't get it, my wife left me, my kids hate me, I have a lousy job and no friends."
Buck Faseball's Therapist: "Your reap what you sow Buck. You. Reap. What. You. Sow."
Posted by: Freealonzo at May 12, 2007 10:49 PM
Ponson is gone.....THANK GOD!
Posted by: kevin in az at May 13, 2007 06:26 PM
Agreed Kevin. I am surprised it lasted this long, but he had a nice start last time, so that bought him another. I sat in the section right behind home plate for his last hurrah. The upside is that Perkins looked pretty good.
Posted by: Derek at May 14, 2007 09:47 AM
it's mid-may, now they can call up a minor leaguer without loosing an arbitration season to him (a full one)
this was calvin-ball cheapness, pure and simple.
the grumbling is that BAKER will get the call which is just STUPID. Gimme Slowey! or Garza!
Posted by: CJ at May 14, 2007 02:39 PM
The reasoning I've heard behind bringing up Baker is that he will be getting one last chance to prove that he belongs with the big club, long-term. If he proves himself, fine; if he doesn't, then he's trade bait and it's on to Garza/Slowey. Either way, Baker has been moving between the Bigs and the Farm long enough now that it's time to figure out what his future with the organization holds, once and for all.
