The Risk Pool: What’s behind Ireland’s economic miracle—and G.M.’s financial crisis?

"Under the circumstances, one of the great mysteries of contemporary American politics is why [GM C.E.O Rick] Wagoner isn’t the nation’s leading proponent of universal health care and expanded social welfare."

Dealer's Choice

Another reason GM is faltering. More-short sighted thinking. Man, I'm going to have to subscribe to the New Yorker, I think. Good stuff in this magazine.

AOL Search Logs Search

If you didn't hear (and I'd be surprised if you didn't) a while back AOL willingly released a couple months of random (and seemingly) anonymous search engine data from AOL Search. This proved to be a huge mistake as some of the search data proved so unique that some people were in fact identified. Oops.

The link above details the searches people performed with each user given, again, a seemingly anonymous ID number. You can search for a keyword, or search by user ID. Take, for example, user ID 711391:

Over the course of a couple of months, user 711391 searched for "mansfield first assembly," "probation officer dan myers," "how do you break off an affair," "why do parents abuse their children," "canyon gate at northpointe tomball texas," "how do you get over an affair that was a mistake," "pictures of sluts," "symptoms of strep throat," "christian poems," "salem lutheran church tomball tx" and so much more, a lot of which I don't want to put into print here.

So, we have a person that may live in Mansfield or Tomball, Texas, who may know a probation officer named "Dan Myers," who may have recently had an affair, who may have been a victim of child abuse, who might like online porn, who maybe recently had strep throat, and who might be a Christian. And this is just a small set of example searches performed by this user, or set of users. How hard would it be to figure out who this person is? Not very, I would wager, if you really put your mind to it.

What a royal screw up for AOL. And to think they were already reeling...

Sufjan Stevens live on "Morning Becomes Eclectic" with Nick Harcourt

I know, I know ... I have linked to something about Sufjan Stevens before. And I know some of you (cough * freealonzo * cough) don't like the music of Sufjan Stevens. But I would wager you are in the minority. This is a link to a video from the show "Morning Becomes Eclectic" from KCRW out of Santa Monica College in California. If you like the music of Sufjan Stevens, this video is 39 minutes of musical bliss. Plus, according to a part of this Wikipedia article Minnesota may be on his short list for states to tackle.

Disowning Conservative Politics, Evangelical Pastor Rattles Flock

“More and more people are saying this has gone too far — the dominance of the evangelical identity by the religious right,? Mr. McLaren said. “You cannot say the word ‘Jesus’ in 2006 without having an awful lot of baggage going along with it. You can’t say the word ‘Christian,’ and you certainly can’t say the word ‘evangelical’ without it now raising connotations and a certain cringe factor in people.

“Because people think, ‘Oh no, what is going to come next is homosexual bashing, or pro-war rhetoric, or complaining about ‘activist judges.’ ?

I don't care who you are, this is a problem. Thank the Lord pastors like Greg Boyd, Randall Balmer, Jim Wallis, Tony Campolo, and Rick Warren are trying to bring the message back to Jesus and His message.

You may also know that the above New York Times article prompted our friend Nick Coleman to write his own article about this topic. This prompted me to say, "Even a pig finds a cherry every now and again."

That's it for now. Thanks for stopping by.

Random thoughts

• First of all, I must apologize for the problems I'm sure you've been having getting to this site. As you probably know, the site is hosted by the UThink blog server at the U of M. UThink as a whole has been seeing increased traffic in recent days on a number of blogs, so much traffic in fact that it is bringing the server to its knees. Usually, increased traffic on a site would be a good thing. However, it has caused me nothing but problems.

So, today we are working on upgrading the server. This hopefully will fix the problems for good. Thanks for your patience.

• You know, yesterday I was joking around when I called T-Paw: Tim "Scooby Doo Where Are You" Pawlenty. But it is absolutely amazing how appropriate the Scooby Doo theme song is for our silent governor. Check this out:

tpawgoldy.jpeg
T-Paw! Don't make Goldy cry!
T-Paw Doo, Where Are You?

T-Paw, T-Paw Doo, Where Are You?
We got some work to do now.
T-Paw T-Paw Doo, Where Are You?
We need some help from you now.

Come on T-Paw Doo, I see you... pretending you got a sliver
But you're not fooling me, cause I can see, the way you shake and shiver.

You know we got a mystery to solve,
So T-Paw Doo be ready for your act.
Don't hold back!
And T-Paw Doo if you come through
you're going to have yourself a T-Paw snack!
That's a fact!

T-Paw, T-Paw Doo, here Are You.
You're ready and you're willing.
If we can count on you T-Paw Doo,
I know you'll catch that villian.

Well, as you can see, the only place where this new theme song falls through is the ending line ... unless you consider Steve Kelley to be a villain. But you may not. Anyone got any suggestions for the last stanza?

• Here are some links for you to enjoy.

• Because of the problems this site has been having, and to celebrate another end to the class I teach at St. Kate's, I went out for pie last night:

I love French Silk pie. Yummy! What is your favorite dessert and where do you get it?

Well, I'm trying to finish up changing the Voter's Guide to show who won. I'll also be using the Guide to track our fine legislators throughout the upcoming legislative session and future sessions. That way when the Twins and Vikings both leave, we'll know who we can focus all our anger on. I guess I'm feeling a little pessimistic. Until I'm done with the new guide, please enjoy these links of the day:

What kills me about this election (besides Kerry losing), is that I am now 0-4 in electing a President. As a college student I voted for Perot (I know, what an idiot!), then I voted for Dole (still finding my way), four years ago I voted for Gore (he did win the popular vote, so I got that going for me), and now I voted for Kerry. At least Minnesota is blue.

Donald Watkins Part II and some links

This post is old! For more up to date information on a possible Reggie Fowler bid for the Vikings please see this post about his recent visit to Minnesota or this post about other rumors involving Reggie. God Bless Reggie Fowler! Save us from this Texas sized nightmare!

• Did anyone catch the news about Denny Hecker and Reggie Fowler today? No? That's because there isn't any. If you've forgotten, about two months ago it became well known that Reggie Fowler, an Arizona businessman, was interested in purchasing the Vikings. In order to assuage the fears of Minnesota Viking fans he partnered with Denny Hecker, a local car salesman, and said that the two of them would have a proposal for purchasing the team "soon." Well, today the Star Tribune reported:

Two months after publicly revealing his interest in joining an ownership group to purchase the Vikings, local businessman Denny Hecker continues to mull his options.

He acknowledged Wednesday that there has been no significant movement in broaching the issue with owner Red McCombs, but Hecker added, "We're still working on it behind the scenes."

McCombs is seeking in excess of $600 million for the team, a price Hecker and Arizona entrepreneur Reggie Fowler do not appear ready to meet.

Does this mean that they don't have the money, or that they have the money but are unwilling to pay $600 million? I'm beginning to think they don't have the money. Forbes recently valued the Vikings franchise at $600 million. Red McCombs will not lower his price. Unfortunately it seems that in Reggie Fowler and Denny Hecker we have another Donald Watkins on our hands. They are all talk, and it looks like they may never make an offer to buy the team. Without some Minnesota ownership, the Vikings have absolutely zero chance of securing stadium funding from the legislature. Even with a Minnesota owner it will be difficult. I'm not saying Fowler and Hecker are the answer, but I definitely know Red McCombs is not.

• I'll be visiting my best buddy Curt this weekend. I'll "talk" with all of you next week. In the meantime, here are some links for you to enjoy:

Have a good weekend everyone!

Not much to say today. The Vikings game was a little boring yesterday, although I think the Seattle offense took it to the Viking defense a little bit. I don't think Tice or any of the Vikings really cared though. Bring on the regular season.

The Twins are looking good. Especially Brad Radke. Shutting out the Texas Rangers is no small feat. And Craig, correct me if I'm wrong, but if one extrapolated Morneau's numbers to a full season he would have 50 home runs and 130 RBIs. That is something special.

Gopher game tomorrow and I am excited about it. Should be a good year for the Golden Gophers. Actually, it should be a couple of good years. Mason is already saying, "If you think we'll be good this year, wait until next year!" Hopefully they can make some waves this year. It would really help their stadium drive.

Lots of talk about potential Viking owners in the Star Trib today. I'm a little nervous about Waitt. He is rumored to be a Vikings fan, but if the Chargers left San Diego would Waitt consider moving them? Perish the thought.

And lastly, the Packers first team offense is touted to be pretty good this year, yet they have only scored one (1) touchdown in three pre-season games. Their defense is also getting thrown at a lot without Mike McKenzie. Oh yes, the fury of the Norsemen will be upon them. They will be like Irish monks defending themselves with pitchforks whilst the Vikings pillage their home land. Yes, Nov. 14 will be a good day.

Yes! Finally, THE Link of the Day

Today's "Links of the day" will be very short. A while back I started this category because I saw a really cool site about rock and roll artists and their relationships with each other, but I forgot the link and I couldn't find it anywhere. So, I started "Links of the day" so I would never forget or misplace a cool site again. Anyway, to make a long story short, I have finally located the cool site whose link I misplaced so long ago. Here it is:

That's it! I'm officially going nuts. I teach a class at the College of St. Catherine's and I've been either grading student websites or final exams for the past 4 days straight. Every spare moment I have is spent grading someone else's work, and I just plain can't take it anymore. So, invariably I will let my mind wander and my fingers will somehow start web surfing. So, here are some interesting links I've found as I try to focus on these stupid final exams! Actually, they are very good. I'd like to think it is because I am such a great teacher, but I know it is probably because they are all great students.

Links of the day

Over on my other site I had a running post category I called "Links of the day." I started it so that I wouldn't forget the links to interesting web sites I find throughout my day of surfing.

Anyway, today's "Links of the day" will focus on April Fools Day. You see, I was the butt of an April Fools joke yesterday. My neighbor Craig decided it would be great fun to fool me into thinking that the new U of M blog site, a site I've been working on for months, was intermittently showing up with green text. That alone was enough to send me into a frantic fury of checking over my HTML and CSS to make sure their wasn't any green hexadecimal codes that got in there by accident. But Craig wasn't finished. He also emailed all my co-workers to get them in on the act, including my boss! Fortunately, one of my co-workers decided to let me off the hook or else I would have been a weeping mess by the end of the day. Craig, I don't know how, but you are going down. You have crossed the line, and you are going down.
