Dissertation Defense - Laura Fischer

Laura Fischer will defend her dissertation "Turning Points in the Transition to Adulthood" on Fri. Aug. 31, 915 Soc Sci Bldg. The public portion of the defense will be from 9:00-9:30 am. Her Advisor is Prof. Jeylan Mortimer. In anticipation of a successful defense, the graduate program is planning a small celebration to be held at 11:00 am, in 915 Soc Sci Bldg. Snacks and beverages will be provided and all current department members are welcome to attend.

Book Award - Profs. Savelsberg and King

The book, "American Memories: Atrocities and the Law," by Profs. Joachim Savelsberg and alum Ryan King (PhD 2005; Sociology, SUNY-Albany), received the 2012 Outstanding Book Award of the Theory Division, Society for the Study of Social Problems. Congratulations, Profs. Savelsberg and King!

Move-In and Welcome Week - Residence Halls

Move-In at Residence Halls began Aug. 27 and Welcome Week runs Aug. 29-Sept. 3. Campus Connector shuttle buses will run additional hours.

Parking and Transportation Services - Gopher Football

Gopher football occurs on seven Saturdays:
Sept. 8, 15 & 22
Oct. 13 & 22
Nov. 3 & 24
1. On those Saturdays, commuter students and faculty/staff with East Bank parking contracts are required to relocate their vehicles to East River Road Garage.
2. For students with Saturday classes, PTS has arranged for a discounted parking rate in certain locations; see PTS Stadium Webpage for specifics

Key to Graduate Program - Advising

Currently in the U.S., 50% of Ph.D. students do not finish their degree. The University is developing and rewarding outstanding graduate student advising. At the April 2012 Graduate and Professional Education Assembly, faculty members, students, and University leaders shared ideas on the topic. Prof. Rob Warren and graduate student Andy Halpern-Manners spoke about their relationship. The Department of Sociology PhD program has a much higher rate of success on retention and completion.

Successful Defense - Rachelle Hill

Rachelle Hill successfully defended her dissertation, "Time in the Great Recession: The Impact of the Great Recession on Time Spent in Healthy Behaviors and with Family," on Aug. 10. Her advisor is Prof. Phyllis Moen. In September, Dr. Hill will begin a Postdoctoral Associate position in the Postdoctoral Education and Career Development Program in Cancer Disparities, Medical School, University of Minnesota. Congratulations, Dr. Hill!
