Prof Meier Research in May 2007 AJS

Prof. Ann Meier's American Journal of Sociology article, "Adolescent First Sex and Subsequent Mental Health,"? was also featured in the New York Times on June 5, 2007. Her research, supported by the National Institutes of Health, examines changes in depression and self-esteem after teenage sex. Though a decade of federally sponsored abstinence education initiatives have suggested that non-marital sex is psychologically harmful, Meier finds that negative effects on mental health are confined to a small proportion of those who have sex earlier than their peers and in uncommitted relationships.
