Her research, supported by the National Institutes of Health, examines changes in depression and self-esteem after teenage sex. Though a decade of federally sponsored abstinence education initiatives have suggested that non-marital sex is psychologically harmful, Meier finds that negative effects on mental health are confined to a small proportion of those who have sex earlier than their peers and in uncommitted relationships.
