Sociology graduate student Eric Dahlin successfully defended his dissertation, "Navigating the
Stages of Innovation: A Study of the U.S. Biotechnology Industry," on Wed. June 23, 2010. His advisor is Prof. David Knoke. Dr. Dahlin has accepted a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Department of Sociology at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT starting Sept. 2010. Congratulations, Eric!

Assistant Prof. Teresa Gowan received one of four CLA Arthur "Red" Motley Exemplary Teaching Award for 2009-10. Teresa accepted this award during the December 2010 commencement ceremony.
Each year The Graduate School recognizes four of the University's top recent Ph.D. graduates with a "Best Dissertation" Award. A committee comprised of directors of graduate studies reviews applications from a pool of more than 1,000 eligible students. The 2010 winner in the Social and Behavioral Sciences and Education category is former sociology graduate student Dr. Michael Vuolo, for his dissertation, "Legal Context and Youth Drug Use: A Multilevel Analysis of the European Union." Doctoral candidate Jesse Wozniak, who is about to begin his dissertation research in Iraq, has been awarded a summer 2010 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship. The award, complements of the 2010 federal stimulus package and the Inst. for Global Studies, will cover the costs associated with coursework necessary for Wozniak to learn Arabic. Go Jesse!
The sociology graduate program was recently informed that two of its three nominees for the Graduate School's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship (IDF) have been awarded for the 2010-11 academic year. Receiving the honors are Daniel Winchester and Xi Zhu. Winchester will be collaborating with the Inst. on Advanced Study and Zhu with the MN Population Center. Congratulations, Dan and Xi!
