The University of Minnesota is celebrating a fifth place finish at the Solar Decathlon.

"It's a culmination of a lot of work, everyone has done a lot of work," said Minnesota student Peter Leeman.

Students had to create a modern, livable home fully powered by the sun.

The houses are on the Capitol Mall in Washington, D.C.

This is the first year the 'U' sent a team to the competition. They competed against 20 other teams from around the country.

Twenty prototype solar houses are taking shape on the National Mall, racing to be ready for the contest's opening on Thursday and public viewing starting Friday.

The University of Minnesota has designed its house to handle the rigors of the frigid, snowy north. Solar panels are only on the southern side of the steeply pitched roof, while there's a skylight over part of the northern expanse, allowing sunlight to illuminate the area below. Lighting in the house will use only 500 watts, total.

Twenty prototype solar houses are taking shape on the National Mall, racing to be ready for the contest's opening on Thursday and public viewing starting Friday. I haven't been inside any yet, but I picked up a few interesting tidbits.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is building a house that reflects Cajun culture--and can withstand 140 mph sustained winds.

The University of Minnesota has designed its house to handle the rigors of the frigid, snowy north. Solar panels are only on the southern side of the steeply pitched roof, while there's a skylight over part of the northern expanse, allowing sunlight to illuminate the area below. Their brochure says lighting in the house will use only 500 watts, total.

The Minnesota team, with the ICON House, faced the challenge of being so far north, requiring a different angle for the solar pv plus the challenges of hot summers. Thus, the design to enable effective pv placement and overhangs to cut summer heat gain. However, designing for Minnesota created new challenges for designing for the competition in Washington, D.C.

Brutally cold Minnesota winters lead to very high heating needs. However, potentially hot, humid weather during the Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. creates a very different set of needs. The ICON Solar House must perform under both conditions, so to meet this challenge we need a thermal system that is optimally sized for both the Solar Decathlon competition in D.C., and for the Minnesota climate

Writ large, by the way, I found Minnesota's to be one of the easiest of the team sites to navigate, with clear (and interesting) explanations of a wide-range of issues.

A team of University of Minnesota engineering and architecture students bolt to the nation's capital this week to build their version of the perfect solar home as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's 2009 Solar Decathlon.

The U team will present its ICON Solar House on Oct. 8 on the national mall as part of the contest that strives to highlight sustainable design principles. The ICON house, which will compete against 19 teams from around the country, features an energy-efficient but traditional design for eco-conscious consumers who might not want to live in a "futuristic" house.

The contest, which takes place every other year, was started in 2002 as a way to push solar energy technologies into the marketplace faster.

Students from disciplines ranging from business to design to engineering took up the challenge of designing, building, and operating the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered house. Next month, the team and the house will travel to Washington, D.C. for the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon contest, in which the house will be displayed on the National Mall for three weeks along with 19 other houses from competing colleges.
