The United States Fair Labor Association (FLA) has reached an agreement with technology supply company Foxconn to decrease hours for its workers.
This comes after computer corporation giant Apple, which has received criticism for supposedly benefiting from low-paid employees working in unsafe environments, requested an investigation by the FLA to examine working conditions in Foxconn's factories.
The investigation found violations in the often more than 60 hours a week worked by employees, unpaid overtime, and sub-par health conditions, BBC News reported. The BBC also found the average monthly salaries between three factories to range between $360 and $455.
Since the investigation, Foxconn has agreed to align with FLA regulations and reduce the number of legal working hours to 49 per week.
This decrease in hours hasn't brought the joy to employees one might expect, however. Workers are concerned about what fewer hours might mean for their future.
"We are worried we will have less money to spend," Chinese worker Wu Jun told Reuters. "Of course, if we work less overtime, it would mean less money."
Foxconn has hired a mass of new workers to offset the reduction of hours and will continue to manufacture products for Apple as well as other technology companies.
