Out of 5,332 grants applied for in 2011, UMN researchers garnered 4,606 of the applications resulting in $749.1 million worth of research awards. The front page article of the student newspaper shows the increase in grants submitted and awarded between 1985 and 2010. The article states that a survey of more than 23,000 principal investigators from U.S. research universities found that those researchers can spend up to 42 percent of their time on administrative tasks rather than on research, potentially hampering medical and scientific discovery, translational outcomes that benefit patients, and improved public health measures.
