NIH publishes sequestration facts

Earlier this month, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published a fact sheet outlining the impacts of the sequestration. In sum, the sequestration went into effect on March 1, 2013 and required the NIH to cut 5 percent ($1.55 billion) of its fiscal year budget, which amounts to 700 fewer competitive grants issued this year and no stipend increase for National Research Service Award recipients in 2013. NIH estimates that 80 percent of its budget goes to nearly 300,000 research personnel at 2,500 nationwide universities and research institutions. Learn more.
