AHC offers mobile device management

The Academic Health Center Information Systems unit (AHC-IS) offers mobile device help for users with personally owned smart phones or tablets that are used to conduct university business. To do this, AHC-IS requests completion of a mobile device management solution form that begins the process to properly set up your mobile device for security updates and settings. Seminar features nursing informatics experts

Join Dean Connie Delaney and Drs. Henly, Monsen and Westra on May 20 at 1 pm in Weaver Densford Hall, room 6-108 for the final Nursing Research Seminar of the semester. Sponsored by the Office of Nursing Research and Scholarship (ONRS), "Transforming Nursing Research: Implications for Research Trajectories" will summarize the impact of the UMN Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) in terms of investment, innovation and collaboration benefits. Dean Delaney will provide an overview of the Academic Health Center Information Exchange (AHC-IE), an initiative resulting in a systems platform of applications, databases and analytical tools to support health sciences research. Drs. Westra and Monsen will present informatics research using large data sets, and Dr. Henly will provide commentary on the CTSA implications for nursing science.

NIH enhances research tool

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has redesigned its RePORTER tool so that data is now organized by frequency of use and other search parameters including fiscal year, patents and projects. The new interface allows users to search a repository of NIH-funded research projects and access publications and patents resulting from NIH funding.

CTSI calls for KL2 scholar applications

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute offers KL2 scholar awards available to assistant professors (in rank ≤ 6 years) conducting clinical or translational research. The 3-year program provides 75% salary support (up to $100,000 inclusive of fringe), $25,000 in research funds, and up to $3,000 in travel funds. This opportunity requires use of a biostatistician faculty mentoring team and includes weekly multidisciplinary seminars. Up to five proposals will be awarded. May is asthma awareness month

The National Institutes of Health has declared May as 'Asthma Awareness Month' in order to improve the quality of life for nearly 300 million people who are affected with asthma worldwide. Minorities and females living below the poverty line are disproportionately affected by the disease. A 2012 coordinated federal action plan calls for federal agencies and researchers to partner in efforts to reduce asthma disparities.

AHRQ deadline for R01 application is June 28

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is accepting limited competition R01 applications for projects related to "Enhancing Investments in Comparative Effectiveness Research." Only one application per institutional awardee is allowed, so please contact Dr. Ann Garwick if you are interested. Letters of intent are due June 7. See the guideline for criteria.

Sequestration impact may ease

The federal funding outlook remains cautious for the upcoming fiscal year. Since the federal sequestration took effect in March, cuts to funding awards have been as much as 50 percent but are now being restored to as much as 94 percent of the original funding level. Sequestration impacts to the Nursing Research Service Award (NRSA) has meant no change to existing salary caps for fiscal year 2013. Continuation awards that had been cut to 90 percent may be fully restored, however, fewer awards were given this year. In terms of fiscal year 2014 awards, no reductions are anticipated right now but NIH is not expected to fund inflationary increases. More federal funding information here.

RPPR: Another public access policy requirement

Implemented in 2008, the National Institutes of Health public access policy has had considerable impact on NIH-funded projects.In addition to the PMCID requirement, and the MyNCBI portal for bibilography and citation management, use of the Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPR) will be required for awards with start dates on or after July 1, 2013, according to NIH NOT-OD-13-035.

The NIH NOT-OD-12-160 announcement states that NIH "will delay processing of non-competing continuation grant awards if publications arising from that award are not in compliance with the NIH public access policy," which includes use of the RPPR for grant activity reporting. A module within the eRA commons, the RPPR is intended to streamline noncompeting progress reports.This week ONRS has worked with two SoN principal investigators to test the system.
