AHC Student Leadership Summit

What: When people ask you about health care reform, how confidently can you respond? When you join the workforce in the near future, exactly what changes from health care reform will you be preparing for? Which bill will you urge your representatives to vote for?

A group of student leaders from the Academic Health Center and experts on health reform will meet to learn about, debate on, and make recommendations on various aspects of health care reform.

Graduate Students Interested in Emergency Preparedness Information Session

What: GSIiEP is a new student-led forum where Academic Health Center students can participate in, learn about, and discuss emergency preparedness science, research, and related issues. Students will be able to:


  1. discuss peer-reviewed articles and research methodologies,

  2. share their own research, and

  3. interact with faculty members and preparedness experts.

When: Monday, Dec. 7, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Project Homeless Connect

What: Interested in volunteering for one of the largest homeless care projects? Then register for Project Homeless Connect! Project Homeless Connect will open the Minneapolis Convention Center to the homeless population of the Twin Cities for medical treatment, mental health care, housing assistance, chemical health care, dental care, employment assistance and training, haircuts, food, ID services, and much more. They plan to have over 400 service providers and are looking for 1400 volunteers.

Project Homeless is on a Monday, starting from 9am. I've already talked to several professors who have classes on Monday. Professors have said that if students are interested in volunteering during Monday classes, it is alright to volunteer as long as they any assignments are handed in early.

APT All Faculty Voting Meeting

What: The fall semester SPH Faculty Meeting will include the Dean's meeting to be followed immediately by an APT Meeting for SPH faculty to vote on Promotion and Tenure Decisions.

SPH Faculty-eligible-to-vote are required by SPH Policy to have 80% attendance at the APT portions of the meeting. The 1st item to be voted on by all tenured, tenure-track, and contract faculty will be discussion and approval of revisions of the 7.12 document that establishes SPH policies for appointment, promotion, and tenure of faculty.

This APT portion of the meeting is essential, and faculty are strongly urged to attend. Without an 80% quorum in attendance on Dec. 17, the APT meeting will have to be canceled and rescheduled.

An RSVP from each faculty member is needed for APT to be assured that the 80% quorum is likely to be met and to make arrangements for conference call-in lines.

Social Justice Leadership Retreat

What: The SJLR focuses on developing and fostering diversity and social justice leaders committed to improving the campus climate for all students and working towards a more just society. The 3 day retreat takes 56 students along with 18 facilitators away from campus to explore issues of identity, oppression, and how to make an impact on campus and in the community after the retreat. Over 450 students have attended our retreats over the last five years and those students are having a powerful impact on campus and in the community using what they learned and the connections that they have made.

When: Jan. 16-18, departing at 12:45 p.m. on Jan. 16 and returning around 4 p.m. on Jan. 18.

Where: Camp Courage (60 miles northwest of the Twin Cities)

Participants are requested to pay a $20 materials fee (Scholarships are available upon request. No one will be turned away for financial reasons). All other expenses, including transportation, food, and lodging, will be covered by the University of Minnesota. The fee does not need to be paid until early December. The application deadline for the retreat is Thursday, November 12.

What: Everyone is welcome to attend the 3rd annual SPH Student Research Day and support the presenters. Posters will be on display from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 5, and the participating students will be present to answer questions from 12 to 1 p.m. Open to the public.

4th annual "It's Global" PSA Contest

What: Create a public service announcement that is 30 seconds or less and enter the 2010 "It's Global" Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest. The top 15 PSAs will be screened and the cash prizes will be awarded on Monday, April 5, 2010
