More than 125 million of America's children now face historically unprecedented increases in chronic disease and illness such as cancer, autism, asthma, birth defects, AD-HD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), and learning and developmental disabilities. Credible scientific evidence increasingly points to environmental hazards and household chemicals as causing and contributing to many of these diseases.

Carl J. Martinson lecture: The Elephants in the Room: Social Justice, Public Health, and Health Inequities

Nancy Krieger, PhD, Eleventh Annual Martinson Lecture, September 28, 2007. Division of Epidemiology and Community Health, University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

Abstract:
Rigorous scientific research on understanding and reducing health disparities is essential, as is federal support for this work. The problems of unjust suffering that we confront are huge, both within the United States and globally. To rectify these wrongs, we need a clear understanding of their causes. The research we need to do necessarily draws on insights from many disciplines and must be concerned with multiple levels of determinants and outcomes and their embodiment across the lifecourse, in different historical generations and different geographic locales. While the specifics of how we approach these issues may vary by research topic, we nevertheless all confront the same three fundamental questions. These are: what are health disparities?; what are their causes?; and who is responsible for health inequities? In my presentation, I will contend that while there may be many partial correct answers to these questions, not all answers are equal and some are out right wrong. To make this case, I will first offer a brief historical reminder that we are not the first to debate these issues. Second, I will argue for why we need an analytic, rather than descriptive, definition of health disparities. Third, I will present several case examples, including some of our new work on current and changing inequities in US premature mortality, to clarify why the science of health disparities is about correct science, not “politically correct” science. And throughout, I will draw attention to some salient elephants, including several in the room whom we need to name if our work is to make a dent in eliminating health inequities.

Native Dancer, Honor the Beat and Summer Survivor Camp: Games and Other Health Education Strategies for Native Youth

Play this lecture now

Monte L. Fox, Diabetes Project Director and Exercise Physiologist, White Earth Tribal Council, White Earth, Minnesota. University of Minnesota School of Public Health Summer Institute, June 7, 2006.

There is a worldwide epidemic of Type 2 Adult-Onset diabetes, but industrializing countries and disadvantaged populations in industrialized countries have the highest prevalence and show the largest increases.

In the United States, American Indian people are afflicted by this disease in ever increasing numbers and cross-cultural miscommunication between patients and healthcare professionals often inhibit the adoption of healthier behaviors.

Native Dancer is a diabetes education and exercise computer game designed to be culturally relevant to native youth. Unlike traditional video games that encourage sedentary behavior and physical inactivity, Native Dancer will incorporate the emerging genre of video games, like Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), that involve physical exercise.

Monte L. Fox (named Goo-Wa-Howish, meaning "Man from Afar") grew up on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in the traditions of his native culture and is an enrolled Hidatsa. Having witnessed the disabling affect of diabetes and obesity in his life and the lives of many people he loves, Monte left his career as an optician to earn a degree in exercise physiology from North Dakota State University. He has researched physical activity and its physiological effects on the American Indian population, worked in numerous neurology and cardiac rehabilitation clinics, and is presently the White Earth Diabetes Project Coordinator, and owner of the Fitness Fox Company. As a national speaker, Monte inspires audiences to find the medicine bag within themselves to stop the progression of diabetes and obesity in their homes and communities, and adopt a positive outlook in moving toward a healthier lifestyle.

Carl J. Martinson lecture: Aspirin and Vitamin E in the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: The Women's Health Study

Julie E. Buring, ScD, Tenth Annual Carl J. Martinson Lecture, April 7, 2006. University of Minnesota School of Public Health, Division of Epidemiology and Public Health.

Abstract: Randomized trials have shown that low-dose aspirin decreases the risk of a first myocardial infarction in men, with little effect on the risk of ischemic stroke and few data directly in women. For vitamin E, while there are suggestive data from basic research and observational studies, there have been few trials of long duration or in primary prevention. To address these questions, 39,876 initially healthy female health professionals 45 years of age or older were randomized into the Women's Health Study in a 2x2 factorial design, receiving 100 mg of aspirin on alternate days or placebo and 600 IU of natural-source vitamin E on alternate days or placebo, and followed for cardiovascular disease and cancer for an average of 10.1 years. The cardiovascular results of this trial for both aspirin and vitamin E will be given in this presentation.
