As Summer 2012 draws to a close and the weather turns cooler, the ReMAP students have returned to campus.  The second year students return from internships with a variety of companies incuding:  IBM DemandTec Solutions, maurices, Supervalu, 3M, Schwans Food Company, Kohls, Toro, US Bank, Twin City Automobiles, Afinia and ZMC Hotels.  The first year students are looking forward to securing their analytic internships for Summer 2013.</p>

<p>The students had worked through Category Development and Brand Development Indexes for the sugar substitute category the first week of class and it was good to hear how these Indexes were used at General Mills.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>The computer lab for the Retail Marketing Analytics Program is taking shape.  LSBE Room 119, the 1st Street Gang Room which is adjacent to the LSBE Atrium is being re-purposed during the winter break.  The new dedicated computer lab will increase the visibility of the Retail Marketing Analytics Program.</p>

<p>The new computer tables and chairs arrived January 3rd.  The University's facilities staff are running the data and electrical cables through these new tables today.</p>

This morning Dan Fishback, President and CEO of DemandTec, Inc., spoke to over 300 students on campus as part of the Labovitz School of Business and Economics Distinguished Speakers Series.   </p>

<p>Dan urged students to develop their quantitative skills as part of their undergraduate careers, irrespective of their degree or major.  He stressed the growing need for  graduates with these skills in the business world.    </p>

<p>The presentation was very well received and increased awareness of the Retail Marketing Analytics program across majors and degrees.</p>

Based on questions and feedback from these presentations, early next semester we'll offer a "Marketing Analytics Taster" specifically targeted to students in these statistics classes. </p>

<p>During the seminar, we'll be able to provide more examples of Marketing Analytics in action, potential career paths and an opportunity for students to apply some basic statistical concepts to answer typical business questions.  </p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>To increase awareness of the Retail Marketing Analytics Program, I have been presenting the program, its structure and the 2011 application process in core business courses.  There have been a number of interesting questions from students which I thought I would share for your comments:<br />
<ol><br />
	<li>If the marketing analytics major is a new major will businesses recognize its value and be willing to hire graduates?</li><br />
	<li>Do retail analysts spend all their [work] time analyzing data?</li><br />
	<li>I'm a health care management major, do health care companies employ marketing analysts?<br />
</ol></p>

<p>Students are interested in the new program and many have picked up application forms.<br />

To increase awareness of this new program, presentations are being made in all Principles of Marketing classes, all Business Statistics classes and the Intermediate Accounting I and II classes.  The goal is to generate a significant pool of interested students from which to select the first ReMAP participants.</p>

<p>Students applying for admission must answer the following four essay questions in 2000 words or less:<br />
<ol><br />
	<li>Thinking about all the courses you have completed at UMD, what one course has been the most interesting and rewarding for you? Please be specific about why you found this course interesting and rewarding.</li><br />
	<li>Tell us about the quantitatively-oriented courses you have taken so far and what you liked about these courses.</li><br />
	<li>Why are you interested in the Retail Marketing Analytics Program and what strengths would you bring to the program, if selected?</li><br />
	<li>Where do you see the Retail Marketing Analytics degree taking you after graduation?</li><br />
