Concerns about Brazil ethanol industry

from NYT: "In Brazil, the question of sustainable energy is often seen as a dichotomy between petroleum and biofuel. But more and more critics question whether ethanol truly is a sustainable energy source in the long term. Few dispute that in the very short term it is a better source of fuel than petroleum, but sugar production takes up land and potentially raises the cost of food, and its production is far from carbon-neutral." Are these real issues?
