Concerns about Brazil ethanol industry

from NYT: "In Brazil, the question of sustainable energy is often seen as a dichotomy between petroleum and biofuel. But more and more critics question whether ethanol truly is a sustainable energy source in the long term. Few dispute that in the very short term it is a better source of fuel than petroleum, but sugar production takes up land and potentially raises the cost of food, and its production is far from carbon-neutral." Are these real issues?

Brazil 6th in clean energy investment

From Pew Charitable Trust report: "
Brazil is sixth among G-20 members for
investments in clean energy and second
only to China among emerging economies.
Brazil's total clean energy investment in
2010 was $7.6 billion, with 40 percent
invested in biofuels, 31 percent in wind,
and 28 percent in other renewable energy
sources. Brazil also places sixth among
the G-20 for five-year rate of investment
growth, which stands at 81 percent. Brazil
is also among the top 10 countries for
amount of GDP invested in clean energy.
With almost 14 GW, Brazil has the world's
seventh largest installed clean energy
capacity to complement its significant
biofuels capacity."

How Pleasure Works by Paul Bloom

Here is the link to interview with Paul Bloom about his book How Pleasure Works. I think there is a strong connection to design concepts. People enjoy things more when they connect to the stories behind them. Essentialism, "the notion that things have an underlying reality or true nature that one cannot observe directly, and it is this hidden nature that really matters."

Innovative and sustainable products/services have deep elements that are not readily apparent. The opportunity is to connect customers to the deeper meaning of the innovation.

Impact of US biofuel policy on Brazil

"Though Gardner concentrated
his attention on the domestic economy, it is important to remember that
the opportunities and challenges of biofuels are global and policy in the U.S. has
ramifications well beyond its borders. U.S. blend mandates, for instance, have
been blamed for destruction of tropical forest in Brazil, where ethanol production
from sugar cane is sufficiently cheaper than U.S. corn-ethanol to overcome a
$0.54 import tariff."
