The University of Minnesota Women's Studies department hosted the Annual National Women's Studies Association's conference in June 1988. The theme of the 1988 conference, "Leadership and power: Women's alliances for social change," focused on women of various backgrounds working together and examining women's differences in order to promote effective personal, social, political and institutional changes. Three conference plenaries highlighted American Indian, international and lesbian issues. 250 workshops and cultural events were held. The Local Planning Committee was composed of representatives from several departments on campus, such as African American Studies, Women's Studies, and the Minnesota Women's Center. --From an invitation to participate letter, Local Planning Committee, 1987.
