The 2000s - Part 3
A central theme for the work of the Center becomes "Connect. Lead. Change.'' A number of new initiatives were launched during this time: a Professional & Administrative (P&A) Women's Council and the bi-annual Women Faculty of Color luncheons.
The University of Minnesota's Office for University Women (O.U.W.) changed its name to the Women's Center. The name change reflects the evolution of women's achievements, roles, and challenges at the university and across higher education in the office's near 50-year history. "Our constituents had been asking for a name that communicated a more inviting and welcoming message, that would enable incoming and current students, faculty and staff women to more easily find and utilize our programs and services, and that would reflect our continuing ability to adapt to the dynamic needs of our diverse constituency,'' said Peg Lonnquist, (then Interim) Director of the Women's Center. --Press Release, University News Center, 8/11/2008. Peg Lonnquist and Anitra Cottledge are the current Director and Assistant Director of the Women's Center.
The first annual Discover Exceptional Women event was held, a week-long series of events hosted by several women's offices, groups and organizations on campus designed to engage women students, faculty, staff, students, and members of the community in the wide range of resources available to women at the U. Courtney E. Martin (author of ''Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters: How the Quest for Perfection is Harming Young Women'') delivered the keynote lecture. --From Timeline, Women's Center.
The Women's Center, the oldest of its kind on a college campus in the country, celebrated 50 years. The theme for its anniversary year is ''Be!'' - signifying the role of women's centers in advocating for women's individual agency and choice to be whatever they want to be. --From Timeline, Women's Center.
In December 2003, materials collected for the publication about Civil Service/Bargaining Unit (C.S.B.U.) staff women were edited and refined into a publication titled "Out Front And Behind the Scenes: Articles and Anecdotes, Images and Issues From University of Minnesota Civil Service and Bargaining Unit Women." Additionally, the C.S.B.U. Women's Initiative received a sesquicentennial grant to support its history project, a video titled ''Holding Up the U: 150 Years of Staff Women at the University of Minnesota.'' In partnership with the Office of Human Resources, O.U.W. creates "Leading From Where You Are" reading groups designed to give C.S.B.U. women opportunities to develop leadership skills, engage in networking opportunities with other CS/BU women and increase their ability to make a difference on campus. --From Timeline, Women's Center.
