More on Spyware

Argh. Spyware. Argh. ITS *just* came down, ran Spybot, appeared to get the spyware out. However, just now, after I logged back in as x-govref and opened Firefox to look at my calendar, out of nowhere a window advertising porn came up. No really vile images, but there's no doubt of the nature of the ad either. I've emailed ITS again, but until they get this straightened out:

Be very careful when the computer is turned so the patron can see. You may even want to warn them in advance; I don't know. -- Amy

Jaime replaced the GPL desk computer Friday. Messages to Julie and Amy explain what she couldn't put back - Amy will deal with those few GPL-specific things. They also do not routinely load Netscape any more. Some things seem to be different (like a different version of Eudora.) And the Start-Up menu hasn't been dealt with. So things may behave a bit differently - be sure to report any which are problems. But the porn should be gone. Jaime says it was the result of web cruising - something hitch-hiked from an unknown site. Anyway, once it has settled down this entire exchange can be deleted.

I did some modifications today on the refdesk computer. I increased the minimum font and icon sizes and made the "My Documents", "Recent Documents" and "My Computer" links in the Start Menu into menus themselves. Hopefully this will simplify use of the computer. I also added Eudora, Firefox, Windows Explorer and the cataloging and acquisitions modules of ALEPH to the Start Menu.
