Public Documents Masterfile has now been proxied and cataloged, at http://www.lib.umn.edu/cgi-bin/pdm.cgi . It is a good source, especially for pre-1976 documents, but a little frustrating because it is a combination of several basic resources. Some index by title, some by subject. Some provide the SuDoc number, others do not. Remember the source, especially that the Monthly Catalog data here comes ONLY from the indexes, which are by subject. And, a Monthly Catalog index entry gives you the page or entry number in the MoCat, NOT the SuDoc number of the document you are looking for.
They are moving the MoCat entries from the Beta (Working) file to the main file. In your results options, be sure to include Beta to be sure you get everything. They have inproved the Search Results screen to be more clear what you are getting: "GPO Monthly Catalog Indexes 1900-1976 with Page/Entry Numbers" and "GPO Public Documents 1789-1976 with SuDocs Numbers." Check both, plus Beta, for the most complete results.
Post comments with additional hints as you have them.

Please direct users who need to burn CDROMs for downloading to Fillmore behind the desk. Due to changes in the desktop configurations, the Business Reference computers are no longer set up to burn discs. This computer is easy for patrons to use for creating folders or saving to the desktop, and then burning files.
EXCEPTION--the two CDROM computers still allow burning discs.

We have moved one of the GPL microfiche readers to the "Mount Rusmore" CD counter. This has two advantages - one, it puts a reader close to the desk so we can help users. Two, it frees up two more relatively quiet spots where users can sit and plug in laptops. Please do intervene if users try tp plug in where the wires cross walking areas. Ask them if they would please move to one of the many places in GPL or BusRef where tables are adjacent to pillars with outlets.
We still have two other fiche readers on the table. One is currently broken - Dan Steele will take a look. We may be able to remove one to the workroom and just keep it as a backup. There are seldom more that two fiche users at a time. And we keep one back by Fillmore for staff to use.

We now have 2 Fillmore CPUs, but one monitor, keyboard and mouse for both.
To use them, start up each CPU and login into each. Shutdown is the reverse - shut down each one separately. You view each CPU independently by using the toggle button on the black box behind the monitor.
As a matter of policy, we'll only start up the NewFillmore each day. If a user needs FBIS, then we'll start up OldFillmore and the patron can wait a few minutes. Unless FBIS has been in use on a given day, there should be no need to use the toggle button on the black box.
Currently, even though the old Fillmore is no longer connected to the Novell network, there's still a login screen for it. Jaime will remove it, but until then, make sure to check the "Workstation Only" box before logging in. If you forget it's no problem - just say "No" to the dialog box that comes up and then check it.

The U.S. Office of Immigration Statistics has a very robust web site. A new feature called Mapping Immigration provides graphic display of statistics back to 1980. It also has the Yearbook back to 1996, and some profiles. The quality of this site is a surprise, considering it comes from the Department of Homeland Security (editorial comment, sorry.)
Take a look, at http://uscis.gov/graphics/shared/statistics/index.htm

An assignment for this class asks students to investigate the marketing of various snacks to children and adolescents. The professor has not indicated to the students that if they pick a private company, the assignment could be very difficult to complete. So, the relevant resources look to be
-either Corporate Affiliations or the Million Dollar Directory to find out whether the company's public or private or a big or little subsidiary of another company and then
-Business Source Premier, LexisNexis, Mintel Market Reports and Ad $$ Summary
We had 2 students today; there's about 15 in the class and the assignment's due on 11/16. -- Amy & Van

The 87 and 92 Economic Census disks on NewFillmore aren't working right now. I have a request for help out to autosys. Should be resolved in the next few days. The same disks installed on Jefferson and Madison work just fine. -- Amy
The 2004 Unctad Handbook of Statistics, which doesn't circulate, is now installed on the NewFillmore. You do have to get the disk, which is in the back of of the manual, which is shelved in the UN section with call number UNCTAD.TD/STAT.29/CD and put the disk in the disk drive of the computer. There is a link to the program on the desktop. --Amy
Got two questions about the 1930 Census schedules within 10 minutes of each other and both patrons were very happy to learn about Ancestry Library Edition at area public libraries. Mostly access is in-house at the publics, but the nice part is that this database now includes the digitized images of Census schedules from 1790-1930 (or so they say). This is where I'll be directing users from now on...--Amy
Van had reported a problem with the mouse on BusRef computer 74, but when Jaime checked it this morning it seemed fine. She left the mouse with us should we need it. I'm storing it in the drawer where the phone gets put away each night.--Amy
