We are releasing some exciting new data at the U.S Department of Commerce and I know Depository Librarians will be very interested in it. A popular data request for many, many years has been for more detailed import/export data, BY PORT.
In February, we will be able to provide this as part of USATradeOnline. This data base also contains value of shipments by air, vessel, land, pipeline and about 10 other methods by 6 digit commodity codes. This means, for example, we can find out the value of shipments (by commodity) crossing the border at El Paso. To my knowledge this detailed data has never been publically available before. (This is the OFFICIAL data, compiled by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. It is the only data used by Federal officials in conducting the business of the government.)

As an illustration--
The recent storms on the Gulf Coast have illustrated the significance of this data. The Census Bureau compiled special Gulf region statistics (released in preliminary reports) to allow data users to monitor trade fluctuations that could be attributed to the two major storms.
According to a recent Census article based on this data, total export trade for the Gulf Region was down $1.4 billion from August to September 2005. The port of Houston showed a decrease in exports by $624 million and a decrease in imports by $430 million. Exports of chemicals through the district of Houston, TX were down $284 million from the previous month.
Total import trade for the Gulf Region was down $1.8 billion from August to September 2005. The port of New Orleans showed a decrease in exports by $578 million and a decrease in imports by $685 million. Imports of oil and gas through the district of Mobile, AL were down $518 million from the previous month.

In February, statistics for over 450 U.S. ports will be added to the current USATradeOnline Web site. The port data will include imports by port of unlading and exports by port of export. Data will be available on a detailed product level by country and will include values and shipping weights by method of transportation-air and vessel. Port statistics will be available from 2003 through the present on a monthly, year-to-date, and annual basis. The expected launch date of the port addition to USA Trade Online is February 10, 2006.

"the composition and sources of the top ten U.S. imports in 1984 with those in 2004".

Ken Doyle is the instructor and will require students to use Choices (Simmons) and MRI (Mediamarker) to research consumer demographics for products by General Mills. The class was given a very brief introduction in Rm S30B this week.
Students will get the assignment next week. It involves researching cereal products from General Mills (or maybe some other food products) They are working in groups.
They are also suppose to look at the annual report for General Mills and competitor information. Mergents is one of the sources he is suggesting to the class, but General Mills web page would also work. Other company sources like Hoovers.
He wants them to use Business Source Premier or LexisNexis for trade magazine articles about the products.
There is a Courselib page for this class which Prof Doyle links to from WebCT. It includes links to GMID and Mintel which could be very helpful.

1. If you want to view your calendar without having to login each time, you can do so by following these steps:
a. go to the web client and login
b. go to Preferences and under the Security tab, check the box for a Global Agenda
c. click Ok or Update or whatever
d. your screen should now have link on the right-hand side that says Email Agenda
e. click on that and send the agenda to yourself
f. open your mail, click on the link and then bookmark the link
Note1: You can apparently do this same thing with someone else's agenda too, although how much detail you can view will depend on their settings.
Note2: anything you have set to a default of public will show as if you were logged in. All other entries will just show "Busy" and the time.
2. Say you've decided you like to be able to view your schedule as above. You notice that all of what you *think* are your desk times show only "Busy" and the shift hours. In that case, you can change the entry to show the details:
a. login to one of the clients (I like the web better for this)
b. view the MC UL BRS-GPL Reference calendar
c. double-click on your desk shift
d. Change the Access dropdown from normal to public
3. Watch out for the desktop client and its permissions. I have everything set to Public on my office computer, whether the web client or the desktop. So I was confused that some of my ALA entries didn't show any details from the agenda link described above. Turns out that when you set permissions for the desktop client, you are setting them for that particular installation of the software and NOT for you personally. So, when I added a couple of meetings from the reference desk computer they weren't marked as public. Of course, just to make it fun, the reverse is true of the web client - when you set permissions, you set them for yourself, regardless of which computer you use to log in. --Amy

The library of the MN Attorney General's office called today about locating the markup for a conference version of a 1993 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act that specifically references Sec. 13612 (about medicaid estate recovery). We didn't find exactly what they were hoping for, but we did locate enough that someone from the Attorney General's office may be coming in some time during the break.
The conference report needed is:
Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1993 : conference report of the Committee on the Budget, House of Representatives, to accompany H.R. 2264, a bill to provide for reconciliation pursuant to section 7 of the concurrent resolution on the budget for fiscal year 1994.
H.Rpt. 103-213
It has seven parts (according LNCongressional) and parts 3 and 6 appear to have, if not markup, at least some summary information on changes that the bill went through.
It is available in print (Serial Set) and mfiche, but the whole report is also available via LNCongressional. Even divided up, the electronic is probaby preferable because each part is quite large. --Amy
