British Parliamentary Papers at the U of M

Thanks to the extensive efforts of Lynne Beck we now have a finding guide to the British Parliamentary Papers at the U of M. It's linked on the Guides page, as well as the home page. It'll stay on the home page at least through next week as Lynne and I will both be on vacation. I haven't had the opportunity to put it into action yet, but she has and says it works just fine. Like all guides, consider this first version a beta and send comments accordingly. Lynne's email address is linked on the guide.

So, if you get any BPP questions, use the guide :) -- Amy

Energy Fiche

We send some Dept. of Energy microfiche to SciEng. This is depository material and it does get a SuDoc, but for reasons one can only guess at, this set has never appeared in the Monthly Catalog. For reasons of internal consistency, when we received it, we would record it in our shelflist by SuDoc - E 1.99: (OSTI ID). However, when SciEng would get this microfiche, they would file it by the DOE report number, which is not at all like the SuDoc, but which does provide subject organization.

So, if you ever have a request for Dept. of Energy technical reports and an initial search of MNCAT/Marcive/Monthly Catalog comes up empty, go to the Energy Citations Database.

You can limit your search to just the depository materials by choosing Advanced Search and entering "GPO Dep." in the Bibliographic Info field. Use the rest of the boxes for relevant keywords. Each record that then comes up should include the pieces of information you need, as shown below:

Title Neutrons scattering studies in the actinide region
OSTI Identifier OSTI ID: 6966927; DE93003655
Report Number(s) DOE/ER/40246-7
Resource Type Technical Report
Availability OSTI; NTIS; INIS; GPO Dep.

If the record says GPO Dep (as it should based on the search above), then check in our shelflist under E 1.99: (OSTI ID) - in this case E 1.99: DE 93003655. That will tell you if we sent it to SciEng or not. If so, the patron will find it in SciEng filed under the Report Number, in this case DOE/ER/40246-7.

Be aware that report numbers can differ dramatically:

Title MIPS and BIPS are Megaflops: Limits of unidimensional assessments
OSTI Identifier OSTI ID: 5005157; DE90006777
Report Number(s) UCRL-101061-Rev.2;CONF-8910155--2
Specific Type Technical Report
Availability NTIS, PC A02/MF A01 - OSTI; GPO Dep.

While this would still be in our shelflist under the same scheme, E 1.99: DE90006777, in SciEng, it will presumably be filed under CONF-8910155--2 or UCRL-101061-Rev.2.

Cleaned up the RefDesk Computer Bookmarks

I have done some tidying up of the Refdesk computer bookmarks, both in IE and Firefox. I was a bit less thorough in IE than Firefox because IE didn't give me last visited dates and I know some staff use IE much more than Firefox anyway. However, bad links were dumped altogether and categories were consolidated.

Both browsers also have a new toolbar category called "UofM" that contains links to the FAQ database admin side, Infopoint Chat admin page, Libdata admin, UMCal, web mail, the staff page, staff directory and Technical Services. Govdoc-L is also now on the Bookmarks toolbar. If I took away a bookmark you do use all the time, please let me know and I'll restore it. --Amy

Guide to Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS) Reports

Finally put the finishing touches on a guide that a St. Kate's student did for us a while back. It won't be needed a lot, but when it is, it will *really* be needed. JPRS Reports constitute one of the more complex sets of government reports out there. However, this guide does a nice job of breaking them down into manageable chunks. See http://courses.lib.umn.edu/page.phtml?page_id=1734. This guide is linked from our regular guides list too. -- Amy

What if there's no guide on the GPL site?

Often, hard questions are only hard b/c of a lack of background info. You get a little background (or a refresher) and you're ready to find our holdings. So a guide made by us isn't an absolute requirement, although having one made with our call numbers and locations is handy. But, how do you find a guide if not on our site?

You have a couple of options. There's the GODORT Handout Exchange first and foremost: http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/godort.html.

If that doesn't yield results, there's always Google. Just be sure to add the term "guide". You might also want to add the term "library". Sometimes it helps to limit to site:edu, but I'd be careful about that. You'll miss a lot of good stuff coming from public libraries and professional organizations. Plus, for legal research, law firms sometimes put up useful information and they're typically *.coms.

For example, say you need some background on documentation on U.S. treaties. At the Handout Exchange there are 7 guides listed (http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/godort/subjects.htm#treaties), but the most recent listed is 2004. On the other hand, a Google search of "treaties library guide" (http://www.google.com/search?q=treaties+library+guide) results in *tons* of current results with #7 from Columbia (http://www.law.columbia.edu/library/Research_Guides/internat_law/treaty_research) being particularly appealing to me. --Amy

Butter assignment - Journalism class - Gordon Leighton

All,

I wanted to give you a heads up that students from a journalism class will be asking for help from reference staff regarding an assignment on butter. Because this is an evening class, they may come in during evenings or weekends.

Course: JOUR4263: Strategic Communications Campaigns
Instructor: Gordon Leighton.
Assignment due: June 29th.

I've created a page with some instructions that hopefully will help them get started; however, they may not know about the page: http://courses.lib.umn.edu/page.phtml?page_id=2143.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions and please feel free to refer them to me.

Thanks. (Assignment listed below...)
Johan

Course: JOUR4263
Instructor: Gordon Leighton
Due: 6/29

Part 1, Project #3 -- Secondary Research

1. According to the Statistical Abstract of the United States, the Bureau of Labor Consumer Expenditure Survey, MRI and other industry-related articles you have researched, perhaps from Business Source or Lexis/Nexis:
a. What are the trends in the usage of butter and margarine in the U.S.?
b. What region consumes the most of the product category that includes butter and margarine?
c. What age differences exist among consumers of these products?
d. What do you think the demographic profile of the target audience for butter should be and why?
e. Which marketing region would you most want to target with a margarine brand? Why? What states does the region include and how do the demographics compare to the region that consumes the most butter?

2. Outline three factors influencing changes in consumption of margarine (cite source).

3. Using the 2004 SRDS Lifestyle Market Analyst, and assuming the ideal target is female, single and 18-34 years old:
a. What 10 lifestyle activities do they participate in far more than the general population?
b. What is their median household income?
c. What other distinguishing activities or trends can you identify?

4. Using MRI/Mediamark (2002) figures about women:
a. Which age group purchased the most butter in the past 12 months?
b. What percentage of this age group purchased margarine?
c. What would you recommend as the demographic profile for your “butter target” if you used this source of information?
d. What would be your top three magazine recommendations for butter ads? Why?

5. If you were to assume that the ideal target is married and 18-34 years old, what five DMAs would you be most interested in and why?

6. Your agency just landed a dairy products account, including its butter brand, and you want to get up to speed on the category. Using the Encyclopedia of Business Information Sources, perhaps the Encyclopedia of Associations (print version), Associations Unlimited (online version) or SRDS:
a. What trade associations might particularly interest you to contact for information on the industry?
b. What industry magazines or newsletters might you consider using to advertise?

7. Using the Encyclopedia of Consumer Brands discuss how advertising contributed to the marketing and branding effort of one of the following brands: Parkay, Fleischmann’s, and Land O’Lakes. What other brands are readily available in the market? What do you know about them from other sources -- for example, what is their market share?

MediaMark / Saving

When saving from MediaMark; make sure user has already put USB drive in computer (if using one); to select target folder, use button with down-pointing arrow (interface is Windows 3.1x). It has intermittent and complete breakdowns and seemingly successful saves end up being gibberish.

Nonetheless, there are instructions on saving by the 3 BusRef CD-ROM terminals in a plastic stand. - Amy

Publications Reference File (PRF)

The Publications Reference File (PRF) was the GPO's sales list for many years, and was an essential tool for depository libraries, distributed in microfiche. It has access in 3 arrangements: stock number, Su Doc classification number, and an alphabetical sequence which includes titles, series, key words, key phrases, subjects, and personal authors.

GPL has retained the set, which has SuDoc number GP 3.22/3: . It had several title variations, but holdings are generally from 1977 through 1999.

In 2000 the PRF was replaced by the online Sales Product Catalog (SPC), GP 3.22/7: , available via the Online Bookstore at GPO, http://bookstore.gpo.gov/. The SPC lists some best sellers and product releases back to 1996.
