Government Publications is celebrating its centennial of participation in the FDLP with a website makeover. Every link that had been on the previous version should still be directly onscreen or within a mouseover at http://govpubs.lib.umn.edu/. Also, we'll be highlighting a different publication of importance from the last 100 years each week. These entries are part of a new blog called "Federal Depository Library Centennial".
Details:
The Indexes and Databases page that used to be in the top menu has been taken away, as has the collections link. Now, you get to each collection guide (which has all the indexes and databases for a given collection) directly from the home page.
The Related column has become a menu item across the top of every page. SourceOECD is now listed there, as is the link to the Tax Forms
Search tools like Google U.S. Government Search and the IGO web search are now part of the "Search Tools" menu, also at the top of every page.
The Statistics column has become a menu item as well.
The U.S. Census has been removed from the top menu, but added to the Statistics menu and is listed in the U.S. list of resources on the home page.

I've created a http://del.ico.us/bgi account - right now solely for government information, but that can surely change as/when BusRef sees fit. The goal of the list is to have a spot for official government publications that may or may not be in the catalog, that were hard to find or are otherwise not readily found using standard tools like MNCAT or Google.
To minimize hassle and, hopefully, keep this list in the flow of reference questions, I've embedded the list in a GPL web page that is linked on the homepage. It's called "Spotlight Archive" and appears on the far right of the list of site sections (e.g. right after U.S. Census). I've already had cause to use it a couple of times to get back to a New Orleans flood base elevation guide.
If you find you'd like to add links to the account, let me know and I'll show you the ropes. It's pretty straightforward, but we might want to create separate directories for Business and GPL links... - Amy

We are participating in the email component for its last 2 months. Doing so entails changing our email form to point to the GIO email form and then logging into the Questionpoint website to answer the questions that come to our email form.
This has the following results:
1. We will need to log into QuestionPoint every work day to check for questions in addition to Eudora for govref. Both browsers on the GPL refdesk computer have been setup to do so.
1.1 All questions that go through QuestionPoint will be stored in the QP KnowledgeBase.
2. Some questions may still come directly to govref@umn.edu, but not many.
3. All infopoint questions will still come to govref@umn.edu.
For the first week, I will do all the checking since I can't answer any questions about how the program works until we get a question... --Amy

There's been some significant re-arranging of some GPL pages as a consequence of the user testing so far. The good news is that the number of active pages is growing progressively smaller. However, if you'd gotten in the habit of using certain ones, the changes may take you aback briefly. The biggest shift is in the US information.

Basic US Pubs and Historical Pubs are exactly what they sound like; the official web sites no longer lists individual agency pages (just a link to the LSU Agency Search), but it does have an updated list of subject.gov pages. "Tools for finding..." is intentionally vague: it links to the US Indexes and assorted other finding aids like the UMich Documents Center, Thomas, LexisNexis Statistical and so on. Research Guides links to another page; in time the guides will be listed directly on this page. The statistics section now replaces the old United States Subject page on the Statistics homepage. I think I caught all of the links to the old pages, but if I missed one let me know.
With most things on a single page now, one can either scroll down the page or do a CTRL+F search for items on it and not have to try to remember where else to look. Send comments as the mood strikes.
Also, just a reminder: all site changes are recorded at Web Site Changes. If you run into problems, have a look at this page.
Finally, I'll be deleting about 20 pages on 6/6/05 (yay!), so after that, the page referenced above will be the only record of what went where. -- Amy

Removed the link to the 1880 Census guide from our public list of US guides. Now you can find it on the Staff Resources page, linked in the footer of the public site.
Also combined both the request form and the explanatory page into one. Users are redirected from censusreq.phtml.
In order to reduce the visibility of our page on the 1880 Census, I've taken it off the US Guides page where it's been for quite a while and linked it from the staff page. I also folded the request form into the informational page.

Went to the Staff Web Brown Bag yesterday. Was so impressed with both the new overall staff web site and the technology used to generate it, I've moved the formerly GPL Staff Page and it's contents to a new Business and Government Information.
Advantages:
1. You don't need access to the server or my username/password to edit it. You do have to learn a few formatting conventions, but they're not a big deal. Means I'm not necessary to have around if you want to modify staff info.
2. Pages come with the headers, footers and sidebars pre-set, so you get lots of handy links with very little effort.
3. BGI staff info is integrated into the overall staff site.
4. The blog url and the login url are right there.
5. It's prettier than what we've got.
