Ovid MEDLINE Remote Access Problem Update

We think that the mystery of the Ovid MEDLINE remote access problem has been solved. It seems that the last batch of licenses sent to us from Ovid were delimited incorrectly. Dan Debertin is writing a script to fix this. So, hopefully, all will be well by tomorrow, if not earlier.

Many, many thanks to everyone involved in troubleshooting this issue.

New nursing students unable to access Ovid MEDLINE remotely

Just wanted you all to be aware that we have received several email from new nursing students who say that they are unable to log into Ovid MEDLINE remotely. They are trying to complete an online orientation module via WebCT. I've contacted Eric Forbis and submitted a help desk ticket, but it seems that the effected students do have Ovid userids and also have all of the correct library flags. We are trying to collect more detailed information from the students, such as the name of their instructors, the url for the WebCT page, what operating systems and browsers they are using, the exact text of the error message (or, even better, screen captures), whether they are blocking cookies, etc. So, if you hear from any additional effected students, please try to collect as much information as possible and let me and Liz know. I am also suggesting to the students that they try accessing Ovid MEDLINE directly from our homepage rather than using the links from their WebCT page.

I'll post to this blog when we have more information.

Thanks,
Martha

University of Minnesota Total Salary Report

Hi-

We've gotten a couple of inquiries recently at the Reference Desk regarding how to find salaries of University of Minnesota employees. This information is published online only in the University of Minnesota Total Salary Report. Publication has ceased on paper, but UMN faculty and staff can gain online access with their x.500 usernames and passwords.

The report is listed in MNCAT under several different titles, including the following: University of Minnesota total salary report, Total salary report, University of Minnesota employee salaries, and Employee salaries report. Even searching in MNCAT using "salary report" as title keywords will pull it up. Once you find the correct MNCAT record, click on the internet access url to reach the UM Reports Home page. Then, click on the "Search reports" box in upper right. At the Report Search page, search keyword "salary" with "All Categories" selected in the Category field. Results open in a new page of options.

Questions about Reserve items.

Once the semester starts we will probably be getting questions about reserve items at the Reference Desk. Since the information about Reserves available from the Bio-Medical Library's web page is not necessarily complete, Dave and Pat have asked that we send the patron over to the Circulation and Reserve Desk. They have resources unavailable at the Reference Desk to answer such questions.

Public Computer Desk Info

Folks,

As the demise of the 2nd floor computer help desk was official as of last week, here's an overview of what to expect as the semester starts up in a couple of weeks:

Staffing:

We will have students available for the majority of the day. They will be housed in 203A, and can be reached at 4-5989. Others who will be available will be Chacko 4-9921 (Room 281), Peter (6-4185), and sometimes Steve
(4-9921). We will put out a schedule of who to contact first, but generally the student/server room number will be the initial contact point. Pagers may be an option in the future, but because of poor signal availability at times
we're going a more direct contact method and measure the results. I'm sure you'll let us know if we're not responding quickly enough, but we'd like to get to you in five minutes or less, unless otherwise occupied. We expect to have two students as part of the IT support staff, in addition to the usual FTE suspects. They will also be helping with staff IT support, so we'll juggle priorities and communicate accordingly.

If not an urgent support issue, you can always use the help desk ticketing system, or please leave a voice-mail and we will get back to you soon.

Class/Patron Support:
There are no real changes. When classes are scheduled in the pit, we will still do the prep and clear out the patrons 15-30 minutes before the scheduled start. We will also make sure the Ovid training mode will be turned on as well when necessary. Also as before, if patrons need assistance, we'll be there.

Public computing requests/management:
Hopefully very soon, we will be rolling out a more automated way of imaging/updating our computers. This potentially means having the ability to add individual programs as well as entire computer images via the network. We have been considering restarting some sort of version of the PAC to stimulate input and ideas, but we'll leave that discussion for a later time.

The bottom line is other than location, not THAT much has changed. IT staff will generally be available throughout the day. However this IS a pilot, so feel free to grace my doorway and tell me what you like and don't like...about the pilot, I mean. My quirks are off-limits, I'm afraid.

Schedule up until Labor Day:
Chacko 4-9921 (Room 281 - 8:15 - 4:30 pm)
Matt 4-5989 (Server Room - 10 am to 4:30 pm)
Peter 6-4185

We'll come out with a schedule for the semester soon.

Thanks,
Peter

Pidgin/Gaim settings on ref-b

Hi all,

When Pidgin/Gaim (our IM client) is up and running on ref-b, it seems that changing the login from ref-b to your personal login settings tends to wipe out the Pidgin account information.

So, while the IM pilot is running, please do not logout as ref-b and login with your personal setting. At least until we figure out why this would happen.

Sorry for the inconvenience...any questions...ask Lisa or Martha

Out state ILL policy (For Duluth Pharmacy and Medicine; Rochester-AHC Allied Health Center only)

Hello-

Randy Brooks sent the following information to me regarding document delivery to students, staff and faculty from the Duluth Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine and the Rochester-AHC Allied Health Center. Basically, it looks like patrons from these programs should request articles using the Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) form. Please see information below for more details.

Thanks,
Martha

Out state ILL policy
(For Duluth Pharmacy and Medicine; Rochester-AHC Allied Health Center only)

Duluth Pharmacy and Medicine patrons are allowed to register in our ILLiad system. These patrons will be asked to select their college (Medical School or Pharmacy, College of) and then their department (MED-Duluth Medical School or PHAR-Duluth Pharmacy Program).
• Articles not held on campus can be processed as normal ILL’s
• Articles held in the HSL Libraries (Bio-Med Library, Wangensteen, Vet-Med) will be handled as Phodels. (No charges will be assessed)
• The articles will be scanned and imported into the patrons ILLiad account.
• The patron will receive an email when the article is available.

Rochester-AHC Allied Health Center.
These patrons are handled the same as Duluth Pharmacy and Medicine patrons.
Rochester patrons will be asked to select (Health Sciences) for their college and (AHC- Allied Health Center, Rochester) as their department when registering in ILLiad.

Bio-Med Library Loan Codes

Good afternoon everyone,

I wanted to let you know that the proposed loan code changes for Bio-Medical Library periodicals occurred this afternoon. All bound journals have a loan code of one day and all unbounds retain the check-out after 3:30pm and due back before 8:30am. If you have any questions or see something odd please let us know and HSL Tech Services will report it.

Thanks.
Nicole
