DiscoveryGate now available for web-based access to Beilstein and Gmelin

Passing this along from the Science Librarians list...

DiscoveryGate, the web-based interface for Beilstein and Gmelin, is now available. See http://www.lib.umn.edu/site/moreinfo.phtml?id=14556 for more information. It doesn't require client software download, but PC users will need to download a small piece of software (for graphics purposes, I think). Pop-ups also need to be enabled for the website to be able to use it. All those Intel Mac users in AHC should once again be able to access Beilstein from their computers.
Jody Kempf and I are working on learning the new interface so we can teach people how to use it. We're having a workshop on Tuesday, October 16 at 4:30 pm, but I'm happy to answer questions about it any time.

Session time out on Primo

Hello,

During the Reference Training Meeting yesterday, Liz asked about whether Primo sessions time out and when. Here is the response I got from Connie Hendrick:

The current time out is set at 30 minutes. We have requested a 5 minute time out. We are currently working with ExLibris to make the time out value locally configurable. We also have expectations concerning what should happen when session inactivity reaches the time out limit.

I would expect for a session where the user did not logon that the search box would be cleared and all searches from the session and records saved in the session would be cleared. I would expect for a session where the user did logon that the user would be signed out and the last search cleared from the search box.

So, there you have it. Again, I encourage all of you to take the time to try out Primo and to use the Feedback and Comments form at the bottom of the window to communicate with the development team.

Cheers,
Martha

Security certificate notice in Ovid

Hi all,

Remote users of Ovid databases are being directed to the message about the website security certificate being invalid/expired.

I've sent in a helpdesk ticket about this problem. Some users may think that they cant' get into Ovid, but one of the options in the browser is to Continue to website. Users should just select this option even though it says that it "isn't recommended."

Registration for Library Classes

Lee kindly whipped up a nice paper registration form for our Fall 2007 Bio-Medical Library Classes. I've put copies out in the racks on the 2nd & 3rd floor whiteboards and in the handouts rack on the 4th floor. I'll also keep some behind the Reference Desk. The form shows all the classes we are teaching this Fall. I would still vastly prefer that folks register online, but if anyone turns in a completed form, please forward it to me.

Thanks,
Martha

Referring to Bio-Med IT Help Staff

Hello-

Just a couple of very important reminders about referring patrons to our Bio-Medical Library IT Help Staff.

- Please remember to log ALL referrals to the IT Help Staff using the Reference Transactions Wufoo Form. To do this, choose "Technical/Computer Issue" under Question Type and then also "Referred to IT Help Desk Staff" under Type of Computer or Technical Issue.
- IT Help Staff are generally available - at minimum - from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Please don't hesitate to call upon them when you get IT questions you are unable to answer. The most efficient way to reach them is to call 4-5989. I believe that this number goes first to the student IT staff work area and then is routed to other IT staff (Chacko, etc.) if the students are unavailable. More information about this is posted under the glass on the Reference Desk.

Thanks very much,
Martha

The European journal of psychiatry via Scielo- Behind schedule for 2007

The publisher of The European Journal of Psychiatry has informed that they are trying to make 2007 issues available next month. There are some issues with the Scielo Library Spain. If a patron needs an article, the publisher has sent me the pdf's for vol. 21 issues 1 & 2. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Problem accessing Ovid remotely fixed!

I am pleased to announce that our stalwart IT team has fixed the Ovid remote access problem. I emailed one of the students who originally reported the problem and he says that he is able to gain access to Ovid MEDLINE from home.

If you do receive additional reports of any users who are still unable to get into Ovid remotely, please get their contact information, esp. their x.500 userids, and forward them to me. IT will need to troubleshoot each userid individually.

Thanks to all who worked so hard to get this fixed.

Ovid remote access still down

Despite the assiduous efforts of our IT staff, remote access to Ovid is still not functioning. So far as we can tell, this problem only affects new users. If anyone contacts you about the Ovid issue, please feel free to collect their email addresses and forward them to me. I am trying to stay in communication with affected users.

Also, Liz has identified the particular article that the new nursing students need to complete their orientation assignment. She has forwarded the article to the students we know about. Because the full text of the article is available to us only via Journals@Ovid, you have to forward the actual article, not just a SFX link. Here is the citation: American Journal of Nursing, February 2003, Vol. 103, No. 2, p. 13.

Please stay tuned for further updates.

Ovid remote access issues continue

Eric Forbis continues to work on solving the problems students are having accessing Ovid from off campus. Here is Eric's latest update:

We've pinned the Ovid problem down- corrupt database- and I've run a program that should clean it up, but there may be yet another issue to deal with. We have to download and import batches of ID/password combinations periodically, and the last batch of 6000 records appears to be invalid. I've tried removing them from the existing records, but can't tell whether this will be enough till someone actually tries logging in. I'll be contacting Ovid today to get a replacement file, and we should have things back to normal soon.

Please keep in mind this this problem only effects Ovid databases, so you can offer PubMed as a possible alternative to Ovid MEDLINE for remote users.
