**************************************************************
On Friday, May 2nd, RefWorks will release new feature upgrades to the service. These May, 2008 enhancements will be made available instantly to all RefWorks users. A notice of the new feature upgrades will also be posted within the program for all users to review. The release message will appear in a “tool tip box” at the top of the page within the program and will be enabled for a few weeks.

Detailed information about the new enhancements for the May release is available at: http://info.csa.com/refworks/feature-release/may2008.html

RefWorks Enhancement Highlights:

In addition to the RefWorks release; we will also be releasing feature enhancements to RefAware! As you may recall, this past March, RefWorks released RefAware - a new current awareness service designed to provide researchers and other members of the academic community with immediate access to new research and publications in their field. This simple-to-use service allows researchers to be alerted when new articles are available - most within hours of publication and many even pre-publication. Harnessing the speed and accessibility of the Internet, RefAware provides a comprehensive, real-time picture of today’s global research. The new feature releases include the following:
RefAware General Enhancements

* Ability to Create Custom Source Sets for Searching
* Links to Author(s) Profiles in COS Scholar Universe
* Automatic Display of Images
* Increase in Number of Search Strategies per Account

We will also be conducting our first RefAware training webinar on Thursday, May 8 at 12:00 pm (EDT/GMT -4, New York). This session is open to RefWorks Administrators in addition to current RefAware users. Registration is required. To sign up for this session or to request more information on RefAware, please go to www.refaware.com.
As always, we hope these new feature enhancements to both RefWorks and RefAware will provide you and your users with a number of new ways discovering and managing your personal research data in an easier, more efficient manner. If you have any questions regarding these enhancements, please contact our Technical Services Team at support@refworks.com.
Thank you for your continued support!

PsycARTICLES

Several access issues has been reported with journals in PsycARTICLES. If you go directly into the journal (for example, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology) from the e-journals page or MNCAT and browse by issue you can access full text. However, if you link to an individual article through a FindIt link (PubMed, Ovid, etc...) you get asked to pay for the article.

If you come across one of these journals in PsycARTICLES, let the patron know that we are aware of the
problem and are working to resolve the issue. PsycARTICLES are handled by
Wilson Library so they will notify me when they have more information. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Biomedical devices assignment

We are starting to see biomechanical engineering students in the Bio-Medical Library again seeking help with a particularly challenging assignment. As I recall from last term, the assignment is that they have to find at least one peer-reviewed article that not clinical (that is, a human study) about a specific biomedical device. For example, the article can't be about pacemakers in general but instead has to be about a very specific type of pacemaker. Mechanical or animal studies are okay; also, articles that focus on the engineering design of the device. I haven't yet had a chance to see an actual assignment prompt this term, so keep in mind that the assignment might have changed.

I wrote a rather extensive blog post about this in November. Please let me know if there is anything that needs to be added or changed. After I receive your feedback, I will create a research guide for our Web site. I truly would like to know if you have any additional techniques or tricks that are helpful.

PubMed left sidebar

Searching PubMed today, I thought I might be going a bit nutty because something looked odd about the results screen. The formerly persistent left menu bar was gone! You know, the one with links to single citation matcher, the MeSH database, the journals database, clinical queries, etc. It now shows up only on the PubMed home page. I checked the NLM Technical Bulletin, which had this not-very-illuminating explanation,

NLM® is introducing new PubMed searching and display changes in the coming weeks. To begin with, the blue sidebar menu is being removed from the Summary results screens to provide space for forthcoming features. Users will be able to access the sidebar from the PubMed homepage.

So, we shall have to see what future changes are afoot in PubMed. Stay tuned.
