Hi everyone,
I wanted to let you know that the Medical School Rotation books are now available at the second floor circulation desk in the Bio-Medical Library. I am hoping that student will know where to ask for these items, but we may get questions about these books at the reference desk. This collection of books was purchased jointly by the medical school student council and the library. These items will not appear publicly in MNCAT since we are trying to restrict their use to just the med students on a particular rotation. Here is a list of the titles: Blueprints pediatrics, Blueprints obstetrics, MKSAP for students 3, Essentials of family medicine, Surgery recall, Case files neurology, Obstetrics and gynecology pretest self-assessment and review, Pediatrics pretest self-assessment and review, Surgery pretest self-assessment and review, and Neurology pretest self-assessment and review.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this collection.

Hello all,
As you've heard me mentioning for the last year or so, CINAHL will be changing from Ovid to EBSCO in July. I've written up this announcement, which will appear soon on the Bio-Med website, and I've sent email notifications to Nursing and Allied Health users. I just wanted to keep you all updated - let me know if you have questions!
Thanks,
Liz
Major change coming to CINAHL in July 2008
Beginning in July 2008, the U’s method of access to CINAHL will change from the Ovid platform to the EBSCO platform. This change is a result of EBSCO purchasing the CINAHL database, and subsequently disallowing other vendors (like Ovid) to serve the database through their platforms. EBSCO will be the only source of access to CINAHL.
The EBSCO search interface is very different from Ovid, but the content of CINAHL itself (journals covered, record structure, subject headings, etc.) will not change. From now through the end of June, we will have access to CINAHL through both Ovid and EBSCO, so you can test out the EBSCO interface before the Ovid one is gone.
A bit of a complicating factor is that the EBSCO interface will be undergoing a change sometime in July, so what you see in EBSCO now will be changing soon. All these changes will hopefully lead to increased usability and functionality.
To access to CINAHL via EBSCO, go to http://www.lib.umn.edu/get/ebsco In the database list, CINAHL is toward the bottom of the page. Check the box beside it, and click the continue button.
You can view a brief tutorial on basic searching in CINAHL here: http://support.ebsco.com/training/flash_videos/CINAHLBasicSearching.html
If you have any autoalerts currently running in CINAHL, they will need to be recreated in the EBSCO system. Instructions for creating autoalerts in EBSCO are here: http://support.ebsco.com/help/index.php?help_topic_id=8
If you have questions or need help with anything involving the new CINAHL interface, contact Liz Fine at 612-624-6492 or evfine@umn.edu, or the Reference Desk at 612-626-3260 or medref@umn.edu.

Greetings,
A patron ran into an interesting problem with RefWorks the other day. He could process the citations using Write N Cite III in APA without incident, but not using Vancouver or some other styles. He received the following error message: "'length' is null or not an object." Here is what the RefWorks support people had to say about this problem:
"From what is described I will assume you are using the latest version of Write-N-Cite (WNC) and that the error is generated while attempting to format a document. It is suggested that the document be "reset".To do this, please open the document in MS Word and then activate and access WNC. Once both are running, select the Revert to WNC v.2 Document option from the Tools menu in WNC (Tools > Revert to WNC v.2 Document) and process the entire document. Once complete, save the changes in MS Word and then return to WNC and select Convert to WNC III Document from the Tools menu (Tools > Convert to WNC III Document) and process the document again saving the changes when complete.
Because the WNC III formatting process relies on embedded code in the Word document, we have seen instances where the code becomes corrupt from multiple editing sessions, the use of the Track Changes feature in MS Word, and incomplete conversions of WNC 2 to WNC III formatting. We hope this will resolve the problem you have experienced."
I hope that this information is helpful.

We've been spiffing up the Bio-Med Consumer Health area on the 2nd floor. Thus far, we have new area rugs that will hopefully help to define the geographic space. Today, our new bookshelves arrived! We still need to move the sign that is hanging from the ceiling and a new literature rack has yet to arrive.
Let me or Del know what you think or if you have any questions.
Martha
The abstracts and indexes that had been on temporary storage at the old second floor preshelving area have now been moved to stacks 73 and 74 on the second floor of the library (those stack numbers will change once the serials stack shift is completed).

My reading material for my morning bus ride was the Spring 2008 (47 (3)) issue of Reference & User Services Quarterly. It is just chock full of interesting articles that I think are relevant to our Reference Services here at Bio-Med. So, for your reading pleasure, should you feel so inclined, I include links to those articles here:
- Miller, Jonathan. "Quick and Easy Reference Evaluation: Gathering Users' and Provider's Perspectives."
- Wikoff, Nora. "Reference Transaction Handoffs: Factors Affecting the Transition from Chat to E-mail."
- Desai, Christina M. and Stephanie J. Graves. "Cyberface or Face-to-Face: The Teachable Moment and Changing Reference Mediums."
