Science Direct Email Access for Non-Affiliates

Hi all,

Here's an email that came into InfoPoint recently. As you'll read, this patron was frustrated with using Science Direct to email articles to their account. The client is a non-affiliate.

Just something to keep in mind for our non-affiliated users:

The response from InfoPoint"

I'm sorry that you were frustrated in your use of Science Direct. As a non-affiliated user, you would not be able to register at Science Direct and email articles directly from there. When non-affiliated patrons want to email a PDF document to themselves we recommend that they save the PDF document on the desktop of the computer, then open up their email, attach the PDF document and email the PDF that way.

I would suggest that you visit any of the U of MN Libraries again to use Science Direct. Please ask any of the Library Staff for assistance. We will be glad to assist you in using this and other resources.

> Dear library personnel,

> Hello. Just wanted to let you know I am very disappointed in your Science Direct service for online access to journal articles. I am a community member who went to bio med library to look up some journal articles. I accessed them on public access terminals and the web interface led me to believe I could email myself full text as it appeared on screen.
> Well, it emailed only citations. Then Science Direct then took me through long registration process that told me I had succesfully registered but it failed to recognize username and password. So I registered again and, predictably, it failed to recognize another username it had just given me. Huh?
>
> I have now wasted several hours thanks to this service. Science Direct even makes it hard to figure out how to give them feedback.

Ref-B is now "off-campus"

Peter has just informed me that due to some proxy wizardry, the Ref-B computer should now be mimicking off-campus access. Please let him know if you discover any reason to believe this is not the case.

Thanks,
Emily

Word 2007 Line Spacing

For those of you using Word 2007, you may have noticed that the default line spacing is different than in Word 2003. Microsoft added additional space to provide "better readability."

Here's the workaround to change it back:

1. Click the Home tab.
2. Click Change Styles in the Styles group, point to Style Set, and then click the style set that you want to use.

To change the default formatting of your document, such as the line spacing and paragraph spacing, to the default formatting that is used in earlier versions of Word, click Word 2003.

3. To set the style set as the default style set in Word 2007, click Change Styles in the Styles group, and then click Set as Default.

Mac's and Web Browsers

I have noticed that neither Ovid Medline nor RefWorks works very well if you use Firefox as your web browser on the new Macs that have been recently installed on the second floor. I recommend that you use Safari as your web browser instead. I found that I did not encounter the kinds of problems in Safari that I did in Firefox. I have talked to Peter Weinhold and Steve Irons about this problem and Steve is planning on changing the default browser on the Macs to Safari.

Print Reference Use Study Continues at Bio-Med

Greetings,

I just want to remind you that the use study of print items in the Bio-Med Library's reference collection continues at least through the end of this year. Katherine would like us to gather two years of data we can use to inform collection management decisions, (e.g., purchasing, weeding and moving items to general stacks). So, this means that patrons should not reshelve books; instead, they should leave them on a table or the cart.

At least once a day, reference staff need to gather up the print reference items and scan them in the Circulation module of Aleph under In House Use. Traditionally, the person who opens the Reference Desk in the morning takes care of this. Brief instructions are in the Opening and Closing Procedures for the Bio-Med Reference Desk (O:\Reference\Ref Desk\Ref Desk Opening & Closing Procedures.doc). Also, it would be fabulous if this would happen more than once a day, especially when the collection is being used heavily. That way, our data will come closer to reflecting actual usage of the collection.

Please see me or Del with any questions.

Thanks,
Martha

24/7 Chat Service - AskMN's soft rollout

askmn.JPG Hi all,

This is just an FYI to let you know about the soft launch of a 24/7 chat service the UL has recently rolled out, called AskMN, in cooperation with Minitex and others. It does not impact users who normally link to chat from HSL web pages at the present, though we may want to reconsider that in the future.

During regular chat hours, InfoPoint chat staff continues to respond as usual to chat questions. However, outside of regular chat hours, instead of shutting down, the chat services rolls over to AskMN. AskMN is being funded by Minitex through the end of June; the UL is piloting its use before deciding how to proceed with its various chat and email services.

A recent article was published in the MN Daily about AskMN provides more information about the service. You can also link directly to the AskMN website here: http://www.askmn.org/about.

Questions about AskMN can be directed to Cody Hanson and Virginia Bach.

Thanks,
Emily
