Ovid Training Mode access in new interface

I've found out that there's a way for instructors and students to access Ovid training mode under the new interface.

People should continue to indicate to Martha that Ovid training mode is needed. Then, go to our homepage and click on the Services link. Scroll down to Instruction Services Home. Click on Ovid Training.

You'll have to show students how to access this as well. Note that training mode does not have the Personal Accounts feature, so you may want to access Ovid the normal way when you teach to demonstrate this, but instruct students how to access it the regular way afterwards.

Ovid Update Workshops Canceled

Due to the delays of full implementation of the new OvidSP interface and because of low registration numbers, Del and Liz have decided to cancel the two Ovid Update workshops we had scheduled for January 31 and February 6. Instead, Del and Liz will offer individual or small group consultations.

All registrants have been notified of this via email. I have removed these classes from the UMN Libraries Workshops page, the AHC Events Calendar and the UMN Events Calendar. I have closed these sessions on the Bio-Med workshops page and have added a note that the sessions have been canceled, but that folks can request consultations. If anyone happens to show up on January 31 at 9:00 am for the session, please refer them to Liz.

If anyone has any questions about this, please see me, Del or Liz.

Thanks,
Martha

PowerPoint Posters class

Even though we aren't offering PowerPoint classes currently, I wanted to pass along that Julie Kelly does offer a PowerPoint Posters class for the University Libraries. This gives our patrons an option if they want to take a class about using PowerPoint to make a poster. It looks like three sessions of the class are scheduled for Spring Semester:

In addition, patrons who want to learn to use PowerPoint might be interested in the University Technology Training Center. They offer short courses in PowerPoint (including PowerPoint 2007, which we didn't offer anyway), and have a PowerPoint resource page too.

Extreme Googling Classes

Last summer, Scott Domanksy and I offered a class at Bio-Med on Extreme Googling, which covered expert searching tips as well as other Google features, such as Scholar, Docs, Books, iGoogle, News, Patents, etc. We realized that this was too much material for one session, so this Fall we are splitting it into two sessions: Extreme Googling: Tips and Tricks for Expert Searching on November 2 and Extreme Googling Productivity Tools for Your Online Life on November 16. The first session will focus more on advanced searching in regular Google, plus Google Scholar, U. S. Government Search, Books and Patents. The second session will focus on things like iGoogle, Docs, Custom Search, Reader, API, Mashups, etc. If you have questions about either of the classes, please see me or Scott.

Extreme Googling: Tips and Tricks for Expert Searching is full. I am, however, keeping a waiting list. Folks can email me directly at hardy017@umn.edu or you can take their name, phone number and x.500 and email them to me. I will notify them if more spaces become available.

Cheers,
Martha

Reserving the 2nd Floor Computer Area

Through his Herculean efforts, Jim has successfully convinced UMCal that I am authorized to approve appointments for the 2nd Floor Computer Area (aka the Pit). So, when you set up appointments via UMCal to reserve this space, I will get an email. I will then log in and approve the appointment so that it shows up as confirmed. I believe you will then get an email notifying you that the approval has gone through.

Many thanks to Jim, Peter and everyone else who was involved addressing this issue.

Registration for Library Classes

Lee kindly whipped up a nice paper registration form for our Fall 2007 Bio-Medical Library Classes. I've put copies out in the racks on the 2nd & 3rd floor whiteboards and in the handouts rack on the 4th floor. I'll also keep some behind the Reference Desk. The form shows all the classes we are teaching this Fall. I would still vastly prefer that folks register online, but if anyone turns in a completed form, please forward it to me.

Thanks,
Martha

Medline instruction for dental students

Hi all,

It's that time of year again - starting this afternoon we'll be teaching the 1st year DDS students how to search Medline. There will be 2 sessions today and 2 sessions tomorrow afternoon.

As in the past, we will be asking the students to turn in a hard-copy of their assignments to the reference desk. The students have until January 19, 2007 to turn the assignments in. You may be asked for help by a student when you're at the desk, but more likely you may be asked for a stapler :) Please make sure the students print their names and email addresses on the hard copy as you accept them.

I'll leave some copies of the assignment
at the desk, in case anyone asks for them.

If you have any questions about this assignment, feel free to ask me.

Mortuary Science

For the next two weeks at the reference desk, you may have some Mortuary Science students handing in their hands-on worksheets (the worksheets are green). This is because I mistakenly asked them to hand in their hands-on exercises rather than just doing them at their leisure. OOPS!! I will collect them and give them to the instructor if he wants them.

Thanks,

Bob

Dental Hygiene Medline Assignment

Dental hygiene students in DH2212 are doing a Medline proficiency assignment. If anyone comes to the desk asking to turn the assignment in, please make sure that their name and email address is written on the hard copy. You can place the assignments in one of the black flat folders on the shelf next to Jim's office. A copy of the assignment is available at: O:\biomed\PubServ\Instruction\Dental Hygiene
