Greetings,
As you know, we do have a few guest passwords for public workstations (PCs) at the Bio-Medical Library. They are listed on a clipboard at the Circulation Desk. Please log the passwords used, along with the time and the workstation ID (found on the hard drive box under the table).
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Log the patron in. We do not give out the usernames and passwords.
- The passwords are very tricky (eg, it is easy to confuse l and 1).
- Remember to change the pull down menu to AD.
- The public workstations are primarily for research and study.
The clipboard is currently located at the Circ Desk near the cash register, but that will likely change with the reconfiguration of the integrated service desk (deconstruction and reconstruction start Monday).
Thanks,
Martha
Hi everyone,
I wanted to let you know that the Medical School Rotation books are now available at the second floor circulation desk in the Bio-Medical Library. I am hoping that student will know where to ask for these items, but we may get questions about these books at the reference desk. This collection of books was purchased jointly by the medical school student council and the library. These items will not appear publicly in MNCAT since we are trying to restrict their use to just the med students on a particular rotation. Here is a list of the titles: Blueprints pediatrics, Blueprints obstetrics, MKSAP for students 3, Essentials of family medicine, Surgery recall, Case files neurology, Obstetrics and gynecology pretest self-assessment and review, Pediatrics pretest self-assessment and review, Surgery pretest self-assessment and review, and Neurology pretest self-assessment and review.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this collection.

On behalf of the 2007 HSL Open House Planning Committee, I just want to make sure that you all are aware of what is going on with the open houses this year. Yes, I said open houses, because we will have one open house at Bio-Med (Diehl 555) on Tuesday, October 23rd from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and a separate open house at Vet Med on Tuesday, October 30 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. At both events, we will have lots of yummy snacks and free giveways. Library staff will also be present to answer questions and to promote our collections and services. Our theme this year is: LSI: Library Scene Investigation: Investigate the Evidence at two Open House Events sponsored by the Health Sciences Libraries.
We are trying something new this year. In order to be eligible to win any of the grand prizes, folks will need to enter an online contest. There are four contests, one for each week of October. To get an idea of what one of the contests look like, please click here. We hope that this will be a fun way for people to become better acquainted with our library resources.
Information has been posted on our Web site . Also, AHC students, staff and faculty are receiving postcard invitations. They will also receive html email and posters will be put up around the AHC. Shortly, we will also have some invitations to give away at service points.
If you have any questions, please see any member of the Open House Planning Committee: Martha, Andre, Katherine, Karla, Elaine or Lisa.
Cheers,
Martha
Once the semester starts we will probably be getting questions about reserve items at the Reference Desk. Since the information about Reserves available from the Bio-Medical Library's web page is not necessarily complete, Dave and Pat have asked that we send the patron over to the Circulation and Reserve Desk. They have resources unavailable at the Reference Desk to answer such questions.

Hello-
Randy Brooks sent the following information to me regarding document delivery to students, staff and faculty from the Duluth Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine and the Rochester-AHC Allied Health Center. Basically, it looks like patrons from these programs should request articles using the Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) form. Please see information below for more details.
Thanks,
Martha
Out state ILL policy
(For Duluth Pharmacy and Medicine; Rochester-AHC Allied Health Center only)
Duluth Pharmacy and Medicine patrons are allowed to register in our ILLiad system. These patrons will be asked to select their college (Medical School or Pharmacy, College of) and then their department (MED-Duluth Medical School or PHAR-Duluth Pharmacy Program).
• Articles not held on campus can be processed as normal ILL’s
• Articles held in the HSL Libraries (Bio-Med Library, Wangensteen, Vet-Med) will be handled as Phodels. (No charges will be assessed)
• The articles will be scanned and imported into the patrons ILLiad account.
• The patron will receive an email when the article is available.
Rochester-AHC Allied Health Center.
These patrons are handled the same as Duluth Pharmacy and Medicine patrons.
Rochester patrons will be asked to select (Health Sciences) for their college and (AHC- Allied Health Center, Rochester) as their department when registering in ILLiad.
Good afternoon everyone,
I wanted to let you know that the proposed loan code changes for Bio-Medical Library periodicals occurred this afternoon. All bound journals have a loan code of one day and all unbounds retain the check-out after 3:30pm and due back before 8:30am. If you have any questions or see something odd please let us know and HSL Tech Services will report it.
Thanks.
Nicole
Howdy -
Per the Bio-Med Access Services Blog, the procedures for reserving group study rooms have changed.

During the Scholarly Communication Workshop on Tuesday (January 16), a group of librarians and staff from the Health Sciences Libraries started developing some ideas for talking points for talking to faculty (and other patrons) about scholarly communications issues; specifically, why authors should carefully & critically evaluate publishing agreements and consider retaining some rights, perhaps even amending the agreement or submitting an addendum.
During our small group discussion, we came up with some possible ideas for talking points and a couple of strategies for reaching out to faculty. Here are some brief notes.
Talking Points:
1. As an author, you own your own work and all associated rights until you sign them away.
2. The license agreement can be more restrictive that copyright guidelines.
3. You can't foresee how you might want to use your work in the future: e.g., place pre/post-prints into an institutional repository, place an article on electronic reserve, use an article for distance education, reuse a portion of your work (such as a table or chart), republish the work in some forthcoming format, etc.
4. We discussed developing some talking points which specifically target how publishing impacts promotion and tenure. To do this, we need to become well-informed regarding the promotion and tenure processes for faculty here at the University, esp. since these processes are currently under review and might be revised in the near future.
Strategies:
1. Collect and share amongst ourselves anecdotes and stories to use as illustrative and telling examples when talking to faculty about scholarly communications issues; for example, under some agreements, a publisher might be able to charge an author $400 to reuse their own table.
2. Identify and develop faculty to champion and promote discussion of scholarly communications issues amongst their peers and colleagues.
3. Create handouts regarding scholarly communications issues that we can distribute at the Reference Desk, during instruction sessions, as part of liaison work, etc.
If I have missed anything, I welcome any corrections or revisions.
Cheers,
Martha
Hi all,
Bio-Med is moving forward with implementing a pilot IM (instant messaging) reference service. If you work the desk then you'll probably be answering reference questions in the near future with instant messaging.
In order to get everyone to feel comfortable using IM, it would be great if everyone could set up an IM account in one of the many commercial services that are available. Our IM service will be able to answer questions from anyone with these types of accounts:
AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)
GoogleTalk
MSN
Yahoo
U of M Jabber
Feel free to go to any of these services to set up an IM account.
Once your account is set up, you can either use the commercial client to IM, or download the open source software called Gaim from www.sourceforge.net
Gaim is the software we'll use at reference desk computer B to answer questions. You can also use a free web product called Meebo (www.meebo.com) to do IM through any of the above services.
I've created a Word document that outlines our project and provides Buddy names for our Medref IM service and staff who have IM accounts. Please download this and read, then feel free to practice with myself or another staff person to get used to doing IM.
Our expected roll-out date for this service is sometime early next semester. I'm also thinking of how to do training with everyone. I'm fairly certain that once we get the service details ironed out that it should be pretty self-evident, but I'm also up for group or one-on-one training as needed. If you have any ideas about this, please pass them my way.
Let's get ready to IM!
Lisa
Greetings. Christopher has received three Rush Bindery Fax Requests that were not at the bindery (this item had been back since April 2005), nor did they have initials on them. This is a reference mediated service and it would be very useful to Christopher if library staff would include their initials on the form in case he has any follow up questions.
Thanks.
Nicole and Christopher
Due to a monograph shifting project, the pre-shelves for books is temporarily located at the East side of the middle aisle of stacks (in practical terms, that means it is next to the oversize NLMs). Please contact Steve for further shift information.
Thanks,
Bob
The Bio-Medical Library used to participate in the Rural Physician Associate
Program, aka. RPAP, by providing article paging and copying at a reduced rate.
We no longer provide this service due to the end of its funding. However, we can
provide page and copy or scan service through PhotoDelivery for the standard
fees if they are student, staff, or faculty of the U of M.

Effective immediately, all interlibrary loan books, videos, etc. will be due on the day provided by the lending library. Our previous policy was to loan for a two week period from the time the patron was notified. Now the due date will be the date printed on the label. We will still return books not picked up by the patron 2 weeks after they are put on the shelf. Please contact me If you have any questions or concerns.
