Google Books and WorldCat

OCLC and Google to exchange data, link digitized books to WorldCat

"OCLC and Google Inc. have signed an agreement to exchange data that will facilitate the discovery of library collections through Google search services.

Under terms of the agreement, OCLC member libraries participating in the Google Book Search™ program, which makes the full text of more than one million books searchable, may share their WorldCat-derived MARC records with Google to better facilitate discovery of library collections through Google....

Google recently released an API that provides links to books in Google Book Search using ISBNs, LCCNs and OCLC numbers. This API allows WorldCat.org users to link to some books that Google has scanned through a “Get It” link. The link works both ways. If a user finds a book in Google Book Search, a link can often be tracked back to local libraries through WorldCat.org...."

I love that Google and OCLC continue to work together to create links that remind Google users about items their libraries own. Now, if we could only get links to full text available via Google Books into MNCAT, that would be really something.

Cheers,
Martha

Citing medicine: the NLM style guide for authors, editors, and publishers

The National Library of Medicine has recently published Citing Medicine: the NLM Style Guide for Authors, Editors, and Publishers. According to NLM, "This publication updates and supersedes two existing publications: National Library of Medicine Recommended Formats for Bibliographic Citation (1991) and National Library of Medicine Recommended Formats for Bibliographic Citation.Internet Supplement (2001)." I have therefore removed these two earlier volumes from the Reference section and sent them to general stacks.

Please note that Citing Medicine is ONLY published as an ebook; there is no print equivalent. It is available free of cost to the general public at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/citingmedicine. Nicole has also catalogued it, so it is available via MNCAT. She also added it to the Bio-Med ebooks page under the Research and Writing section.

For more information about Citing Medicine, please see: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/bv.fcgi?rid=citmed.

Current Protocols in Immunology

Hello Everyone,

Liz informed Amy yesterday about a problem with Current Protocols in Immunology and Amy got in touch with Wiley this morning. As it turns out Wiley is having problems across the board and they are working to fix these problems as soon as possible, but we do not have a specific timeline. We will let you know when everything is up and running again.

Student Consult Extras

As you may know, some of our new monograph acquisitions have added online links that compliment the written text. The three titles that I am specifically talking about are: Gray's Anatomy for Students, Textbook of Medical Physiology, and Medical Neuroscience, all have online content available through Student Consult. Although the online content mirrors the written text there are some additional content which patrons may find useful. Links to the online content appears in MNCAT and to access it patrons will be prompted by a proxy URL for their X.500 username and password. This then brings them to a screen with username and password information that they will need to use the listed username/password to access the online content. Unfortunately, only one person can log onto this account at a time and there are three titles that have electronic content available through Student Consult. It does not seem like we can create separate accounts for each title, but I am still working on this issue. Let me know if there are further questions/concerns.

CRC handbooks online

There are two collections of CRC handbooks available online to U of M patrons (paid for by the Sci/Eng folks, I believe):

ChemNetBase and EngNetBase

The ChemEngBase includes some wonderful books including Dictionary of Drugs, Dictionary of Natural Products, Dictionary of Organic Compounds (maybe we can withdraw our Reference print copy?), Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Polymers: A Property Database (for those questions we get about polymers that we've had trouble answering in the past), and Properties of Organic Compounds.

The engineering database, EngNetBase, has an even larger selection of titles, but they don't mean as much to me (being engineering illiterate).

Links to both of these are available in MNCAT.

Maybe you knew about these, but I didn't until a patron told me! Kathy
