Instead, over the next month or so, we will be transitioning department-funded staff and faculty to departmental copy cards, which are special copy cards tied to EFS numbers that act like credit cards. Departments will be invoiced each month for any charges made against the card.

I wanted to let you know that we are experiencing problems with the Find It links when trying to connect to a citation from an article index for the MDConsult Eclinics titles. If you use Find It for an Eclinics title from an article index you are routed to an Elsevier page instead of a MDConsult page. This problem is not occurring when using the E-Journals catalog, just the indexes. I will be working to resolve this problem, but it may take some time to track down where the problem lies. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Here's an email that came into InfoPoint recently. As you'll read, this patron was frustrated with using Science Direct to email articles to their account. The client is a non-affiliate.

Just something to keep in mind for our non-affiliated users:

The response from InfoPoint"

I'm sorry that you were frustrated in your use of Science Direct. As a non-affiliated user, you would not be able to register at Science Direct and email articles directly from there. When non-affiliated patrons want to email a PDF document to themselves we recommend that they save the PDF document on the desktop of the computer, then open up their email, attach the PDF document and email the PDF that way.

I would suggest that you visit any of the U of MN Libraries again to use Science Direct. Please ask any of the Library Staff for assistance. We will be glad to assist you in using this and other resources.

> Dear library personnel,
>
> Hello. Just wanted to let you know I am very disappointed in your Science Direct service for online access to journal articles. I am a community member who went to bio med library to look up some journal articles. I accessed them on public access terminals and the web interface led me to believe I could email myself full text as it appeared on screen.
> Well, it emailed only citations. Then Science Direct then took me through long registration process that told me I had succesfully registered but it failed to recognize username and password. So I registered again and, predictably, it failed to recognize another username it had just given me. Huh?
>
> I have now wasted several hours thanks to this service. Science Direct even makes it hard to figure out how to give them feedback.

Greetings,

I just want to remind you that the use study of print items in the Bio-Med Library's reference collection continues at least through the end of this year. Katherine would like us to gather two years of data we can use to inform collection management decisions, (e.g., purchasing, weeding and moving items to general stacks). So, this means that patrons should not reshelve books; instead, they should leave them on a table or the cart.

At least once a day, reference staff need to gather up the print reference items and scan them in the Circulation module of Aleph under In House Use. Traditionally, the person who opens the Reference Desk in the morning takes care of this. Brief instructions are in the Opening and Closing Procedures for the Bio-Med Reference Desk (O:\Reference\Ref Desk\Ref Desk Opening & Closing Procedures.doc). Also, it would be fabulous if this would happen more than once a day, especially when the collection is being used heavily. That way, our data will come closer to reflecting actual usage of the collection.

Please see me or Del with any questions.

Thanks,

Hi all,

This is just an FYI to let you know about the soft launch of a 24/7 chat service the UL has recently rolled out, called AskMN, in cooperation with Minitex and others. It does not impact users who normally link to chat from HSL web pages at the present, though we may want to reconsider that in the future.

During regular chat hours, InfoPoint chat staff continues to respond as usual to chat questions. However, outside of regular chat hours, instead of shutting down, the chat services rolls over to AskMN. AskMN is being funded by Minitex through the end of June; the UL is piloting its use before deciding how to proceed with its various chat and email services.

A recent article was published in the MN Daily about AskMN provides more information about the service. You can also link directly to the AskMN website here: http://www.askmn.org/about.

Questions about AskMN can be directed to Cody Hanson and Virginia Bach.

Hello-

FY2008-09 Form
Just a reminder that there is a new form for logging instruction and outreach statistics for FY 2008-09, meaning anything after July 1, 2008. I've seen some August and September statistics on the FY 2007-08 form, so please change your bookmarks to: https://hsllibs.wufoo.com/forms/hsl-instruction-outreach-statistics-200809/. I've also posted this link on the LEIS page in the FY2008 section.

Don't forget about outreach
Also, I encourage you to log not only all of your instruction efforts (except for consultations, of course, which now go into Desk Tracker), but also to log your outreach efforts. Have you spoken to any outside groups or unaffiliated professionals? Have you done any exhibits, either on or off campus? These need to be logged. As an official Outreach Library for the Greater Midwest Region (GMR) of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), we have a contractual obligation to provide outreach to the region and we need to be able to report these efforts to the GMR. Also, of course, we need to have a clear picture of what outreach we are doing for our own internal purposes.

Thanks very much,

Greetings,

As you know, we do have a few guest passwords for public workstations (PCs) at the Bio-Medical Library. They are listed on a clipboard at the Circulation Desk. Please log the passwords used, along with the time and the workstation ID (found on the hard drive box under the table).

Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Log the patron in. We do not give out the usernames and passwords.
- The passwords are very tricky (eg, it is easy to confuse l and 1).
- Remember to change the pull down menu to AD.
- The public workstations are primarily for research and study.

The clipboard is currently located at the Circ Desk near the cash register, but that will likely change with the reconfiguration of the integrated service desk (deconstruction and reconstruction start Monday).

Thanks,
Martha

Greetings,

Another thing the NTCC trainers talked about in the PubMed Class on Tuesday were the big changes coming any moment now to MyNCBI. At some point this week, MyNCBI will be taken down for a few hours (see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/so08/so08_myncbi_unavailable.html).

For a sneak peak at the changes to MyNCBI, please see: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/so08/so08_myncbi_redesign.html. There will be significant changes to navigation, managing collections and saved searches plus a new bibliography feature. Also, according to the NTCC trainers, one will now be able to save an unlimited number of searches within a single MyNCBI account.

If you are not yet subscribed to the NLM Technical Bulletin, I strongly encourage you to do so. It really is an essential resource for keeping up with news from NLM, especially changes to PubMed and thus avoid at least some of those awkward moments of logging into PubMed and being totally surprised by new features or functionality. You can sign up to receive email alerts or subscribe to the RSS feed here: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/tb.html.

Greetings,

Those of you who do instruction might be interested in this 12-minute video from NLM: Branching Out: The MeSH Vocabulary (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/disted/video/). We watched this during the NTCC PubMed class on Tuesday. I think it could be useful to push this out to students before an integrated instruction class to introduce them to the concept of MeSH. We could also post this and other similar videos and presentations on WebCT/Vista or Moodle pages as supplementary material. Should we post this on our Bio-Med Web page? What do you think?

The NTCC trainers also showed these cute little animated tutorials from the University of Lethbridge Library about Boolean Operators: http://www.uleth.ca/lib/guides/research/display.asp?PageID=35.

There's a bunch of other instructional material on the NLM Distance Education Program Resources page (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/dist_edu.html).
