The Ref bookmarks page now includes a link to ExLibris Primo at NCSU and the Primo charter, which states as the Project Outcome that Primo will go into use on campus no later than next summer (2007). This will give us a hint of how the future MNCAT may look.
The Libraries will be helping ExLibris to develop this product. You can get an idea of what features that could be included from NCSU's new catalog, which they developed together with a company different from Exlibris ( http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/catalog/).

Starting Monday June 26th, Metro Sales will remove 10 public copiers from Wilson Library and 3 public copiers and the color copier from Magrath to help facilitate the installation of the new copiers in July. We will also be adding notices to any remaining coin towers letting our patrons know that sometime during the month of July we will no longer be accepting coin for our vended copies. On this notice we also list their options for purchasing a copy card.
If you have any questions please contact Amy Boemer (612) 625-5281
you should feel free to call Joey for a quick question just as you might with another specialist and to refer patrons to him for a more in-depth appointment with a patron.
I'll ask him to put his business card behind the desk.) The cool thing is that Joey has access to the IC computers through VNC, which means he can remotely view and control them. If a patron has a cell phone they can work together with the patron in the IC and him in Walter.

Subject:Joey's Move to Walter
message forwarded to Ref Desk mail on 6/29 by Susan
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you probably know, Joey is our 3/4 staff person who is managing the Info Commons and has been officing in 180 near Denny's space. In the past, when a difficult question would come up regarding IC technology/etc. that the IC staffer couldn't answer, occasionally that patron made their way over to the Ref Desk for help. The Reffer could then run back into 180 and hope to find either Joey, Caroline, or myself to see if we could help.
Awhile ago Caroline and I had asked for informal feedback from IRIS staff to see if the ability to do this might merit leaving Joey in Wilson. Most folks said it wasn't a big deal and that he should move with the rest of the new department.
So what you need to know is that you should feel free to call Joey for a quick question just as you might with another specialist and to refer patrons to him for a more in-depth appointment with a patron. I'll ask him to put his business card behind the desk.) The cool thing is that Joey has access to the IC computers through VNC, which means he can remotely view and control them. If a patron has a cell phone they can work together with the patron in the IC and him in Walter. Joey's also frequently on IM if you'd like to contact him that way

Subject: Butter assignment - Journalism class - Gordon Leighton
All,
I wanted to give you a heads up that students from a journalism class will be asking for help from reference staff regarding an assignment on butter. Because this is an evening class, they may come in during evenings or weekends.
Course: JOUR4263: Strategic Communications Campaigns
Instructor: Gordon Leighton.
Assignment due: June 29th.
I've created a page with some instructions that hopefully will help them get started; however, they may not know about the page: http://courses.lib.umn.edu/page.phtml?page_id=2143.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions and please feel free to refer them to me.
(I've pasted the assignment/project description in the extended entry below -- Denny)
CourseLib page for this assignment is at

Due: 6/29
Part 1, Project #3 -- Secondary Research
1. According to the Statistical Abstract of the United States, the Bureau of Labor Consumer Expenditure Survey, MRI and other industry-related articles you have researched, perhaps from Business Source or Lexis/Nexis:
a. What are the trends in the usage of butter and margarine in the U.S.?
b. What region consumes the most of the product category that includes butter and margarine?
c. What age differences exist among consumers of these products?
d. What do you think the demographic profile of the target audience for butter should be and why?
e. Which marketing region would you most want to target with a margarine brand? Why? What states does the region include and how do the demographics compare to the region that consumes the most butter?
2. Outline three factors influencing changes in consumption of margarine (cite source).
3. Using the 2004 SRDS Lifestyle Market Analyst, and assuming the ideal target is female, single and 18-34 years old:
a. What 10 lifestyle activities do they participate in far more than the general population?
b. What is their median household income?
c. What other distinguishing activities or trends can you identify?
4. Using MRI/Mediamark (2002) figures about women:
a. Which age group purchased the most butter in the past 12 months?
b. What percentage of this age group purchased margarine?
c. What would you recommend as the demographic profile for your “butter target if you used this source of information?
d. What would be your top three magazine recommendations for butter ads? Why?
5. If you were to assume that the ideal target is married and 18-34 years old, what five DMAs would you be most interested in and why?
6. Your agency just landed a dairy products account, including its butter brand, and you want to get up to speed on the category. Using the Encyclopedia of Business Information Sources, perhaps the Encyclopedia of Associations (print version), Associations Unlimited (online version) or SRDS:
a. What trade associations might particularly interest you to contact for information on the industry?
b. What industry magazines or newsletters might you consider using to advertise?
7. Using the Encyclopedia of Consumer Brands discuss how advertising contributed to the marketing and branding effort of one of the following brands: Parkay, Fleischmann’s, and Land O’Lakes. What other brands are readily available in the market? What do you know about them from other sources -- for example, what is their market share?

Last month or so, headphones disappeared from the Adaptive Tech Lab on 3rd floor. CAP (Computer Accommodations Program) has replaced the missing headphones, and they maintain ALL the equipment in 307, but in order to enhance service to our users with disabilities, Circ has agreed to keep a spare pair of headphones in case it happens again. Did you know? Two sided copies (available as a pulldown menu option when printing from a computer in the Information Commons) cost as much as single sided. People are paying for each image, not by the sheet. SG

Staff comments re FirstGov and Google US Gov.
Read on below.
Google's government search is only partially new. Google's had a government-domain search for several years; this is just a new iteration of it in which they're joining together the personalized homepage and news service with the specialized search (presumably improved as a result of the Google Sitemaps initiative).
When I saw it announced earlier today I wondered who the intended audience was - certainly the news sources, the Washington weather, etc. all seem to be aimed pretty squarely at agency personnel more than the general public.
Yet, Google is advertising the site as a direct (if not explicitly stated) competitor to FirstGov, the government's main web portal. FirstGov is run on a contract with MSN and Vivissimo at the moment. Presumably the new Government Search iteration is a pilot to show that Google would be a much better choice for all that nice federal money.
Google's claims notwithstanding, the FirstGov search engine has some pretty nifty features that Google does not and I recommend checking it out - http://www.firstgov.gov/ In particular, Firstgov does a decent job of recognizing the consumer relationship of citizens to the government and responding to those needs. FirstGov also does a reasonably decent job of letting users sort their results, an option simply not available from Google.
my two cents

Want to find those IRS forms to get in your taxes on time? Need to figure out where to send your DMV fees, or find the phone number for your local parks and rec department? Google U.S. Government Search launches today -- it's a site on which you can 1) search across a huge index of U.S. Federal, state and local government websites via a single search box, and 2) stay up to date through personalized content feeds from government agencies and press outlets. Off you go.

During its weekly period (1950s to early 1960s), the IVORY TOWER was apparently published each Monday, replacing the usual DAILY entirely on that date, per comments found on the web. Spot checks I made on the DAILY onine archive bear this out:
http://www.mndaily.com/archive/
Don't know about RANDOM magazine, though.
Denny Lien
Read in the summer M about the Ivory Tower: the undergraduate art and literary magazine of the University of Minnesota (also published online) and note that the new incarnation is listed in MNCAT, currently being catalogued for Wilson Library.
The original version (1965-1969) that served as the inspiration is hidden in the MNCAT record for the Minnesota daily, with a reference to the alternate, briefer title Ivory Tower. Read on to see both records. Note that Dennis caught the incomplete info in MNCAT whereas WCAT shows a longer run. He has reported it to FIXIT. From what I can tell on June 14, the record is searchable by title Ivory Tower now, but the five year run info is the same, and I am sure Denny said the run was longer. I'll keep you posted. SG
Instead of inventing a name for the new publication, they chose to honor the past. "The old Ivory Tower was stylish and cool," says Jake Ricker, the magazine's other editor-in-chief. (According to Hampl, Keillor saw it as a "kiddie New Yorker.")

Part of Denny's report to FIXIT:
MNCAT record is findable only with a keyword phrase search -- and in any case, even the record in
the DAILY entry above is incomplete, since it refers only to the monthly from 1965-1969,
while the original IVORY TOWER goes back to 1952 as a weekly -- per WorldCat:
WCAT RECORD FOR THE OLD VERSION (more correct, noted by Denny)

Since the reappearance of this title will probably have some people looking for its
predecessors, it would be nice if the MNCAT records could be beefed up to make
them findable. (RANDOM MAGAZINE also, since that also has no entry of
its own and is also findable only with keyword phrase search.)
